The state government has issued official orders reinstating the two senior bureaucrats, though disciplinary proceedings against them remain ongoing.

The Kerala government has officially ended the prolonged suspension of two senior IAS officers, B. Ashok and N. Prasanth, in a move that signals a potential realignment within the state’s administrative corridors. Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak issued the formal orders on June 6, confirming that the reinstatement of both officers is effective immediately. While the revocation brings the two back into the fold, the state administration has clarified that the disciplinary inquiries initiated against them will continue to follow standard service rules.

Context of the Suspensions

The two officers had faced severe disciplinary action during the tenure of the LDF government, primarily due to public disagreements with official state policy. B. Ashok, a 1998-batch officer who served as the Vice Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University and Principal Secretary of Sainik Welfare, was suspended in April this year. His suspension followed public criticism of government policies shared on social media, an act that had previously placed him at odds with the administration over various postings.

N. Prasanth, a 2007-batch officer, faced a longer period of isolation from the service. He was initially suspended on November 11, 2024, after leveling serious allegations against senior leadership, specifically targeting the current Chief Secretary, A. Jayathilak—who was then the Additional Chief Secretary—and former Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan. His suspension had been subject to multiple extensions, with the most recent one occurring as late as May 2026.

Bureaucratic Realignments

The return of these high-ranking officers is being closely watched by observers of the state's political climate. Reports suggest that this decision may be the precursor to a broader bureaucratic shake-up within the Secretariat. The transition follows a notable change in the state's political leadership, with the Satheesan-led government now overseeing the administrative processes that previously resulted in the officers' removal from active duty.

Despite the lifting of the suspension, the path forward for both bureaucrats remains complex. In recent public commentary, Dr. B. Ashok maintained that while boundaries were arguably tested during the friction, both cases remain legally and procedurally defendable. By keeping the disciplinary proceedings active, the government has ensured that the underlying grievances—whether administrative or political—will continue to be scrutinized through official channels, even as the officers resume their roles.
