In a blockbuster IPL trade, Rishabh Pant returns to the Delhi Capitals for ₹15 crore, marking a significant pay cut and a high-stakes roster shuffle.

The sight of Rishabh Pant in anything other than a Delhi Capitals jersey always felt like a temporary glitch in the IPL’s reality. That glitch has now been corrected. After two turbulent seasons with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter is heading back to his original franchise, a move sealed by a staggering ₹12 crore pay cut. The trade, finalized this Tuesday, sees Pant move for ₹15 crore—a far cry from the record-breaking ₹27 crore he commanded when he first joined the Super Giants.

A Stalled Experiment

The move comes as an admission that the LSG experiment simply didn't click. When Sanjiv Goenka brought Pant on board ahead of the 2025 season, the narrative was one of a long-term partnership. Instead, under the guidance of Justin Langer and Tom Moody, the team struggled for identity. The numbers tell a grim story: Pant managed just 269 runs in 2025 and 312 runs in 2026, with only a single half-century to show for the latter campaign.

The leadership side of the ledger was equally underwhelming. The franchise finished seventh in 2025 and hit rock bottom this past season, tallying only four wins. For a player who had steered the Delhi side through 43 matches as skipper between 2021 and 2024, the Lucknow stint proved to be a difficult chapter that neither party could afford to extend.

The Swap: Kuldeep Heads to Lucknow

As part of the deal, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav is moving in the opposite direction to join LSG at his existing fee of ₹13.50 crore. Kuldeep’s trajectory in Delhi had been impressive since he joined in 2022, amassing 72 wickets in 65 games. However, like Pant, his 2026 season was a struggle. He leaked runs at an economy of 10.30, managing only 10 wickets across 14 appearances. The trade represents a fresh start for a bowler who desperately needs to rediscover his rhythm outside the capital.

Why it matters

This trade is a striking reminder of the league's ruthless pragmatism. It isn't just about player movement; it is about course correction. For the Delhi Capitals, the return of Pant is a gamble on familiarity and emotional capital, hoping to reignite the energy he brought to the franchise during his 111-match tenure. For LSG, parting with a massive salary anchor allows for a structural overhaul. In the modern IPL, even the biggest stars are subject to the cold math of performance-based valuations. If the last two years have taught the franchises anything, it is that record-breaking paychecks rarely guarantee results.
