Injury blow for Team India: Nitish Kumar Reddy out of UK tour, Suryansh Shedge gets the call-up

The injury-prone cycle continues for India’s middle-order as a quadriceps tear forces a change to the T20 squad ahead of the upcoming tour.
The BCCI has confirmed a significant setback for the Indian cricket team just as preparations for the UK tour were intensifying. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had been carving out a regular spot in the playing XI, has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 series against Ireland and England due to a quadriceps muscle injury. The issue surfaced following the third ODI against Afghanistan, and after a medical assessment, the BCCI board recommended a rehab stint, leaving a void in the side’s balance.
In his absence, 23-year-old batting all-rounder Suryansh Shedge has been drafted into the team as his replacement. Shedge, who operates as a right-arm medium-pace bowler, recently caught the selectors' eyes during the India A tri-series. Across five matches, he tallied 147 runs—highlighted by a crucial 72 against Sri Lanka A—and chipped in with two wickets.
The immediate challenge
The timing of this injury is particularly taxing. With Hardik Pandya already sidelined, the team management had been relying on Nitish to provide stability in the middle order and offer overs with the ball. Now, the burden shifts to Shedge, who faces the daunting task of adjusting to the seaming conditions of Ireland and England on short notice.
The tour is set to be a rigorous test of depth. India begins its campaign in Ireland with two T20 matches on June 26 and 28. This will be immediately followed by a transition to England for a larger assignment comprising five T20s and three ODIs, spanning from July 1 to July 19.
Why it matters
This development highlights the fragile nature of India's current white-ball transition. While platforms like sportsyaari and international outlets like mshale monitor these developments, the reality for the team management is more clinical: the search for a permanent pace-bowling all-rounder remains a work in progress.
The injury to Nitish disrupts the tactical consistency the team was trying to build. For Shedge, this is a sink-or-swim moment. The selectors are clearly prioritizing players with recent match fitness and domestic form, but international touring conditions are a different beast. Whether Shedge can replicate his India A performance on English soil will be the ultimate litmus test for his future in the national setup.
