Tamil Nadu Orders Probe Into Theft Of 18 Hard Disks From Electricity Office
State authorities are investigating a significant security breach at the TNEB headquarters in Chennai, where sensitive digital records were stolen.
A major investigation is underway in Chennai after the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) reported a security breach involving the disappearance of 18 hard disks from its headquarters on Anna Salai. Electricity Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar confirmed that the police have initiated a formal inquiry into the incident, which occurred between May 16 and May 17, and have already secured several individuals for questioning.
The Chintadripet police have apprehended a temporary contract employee in connection with the case. Furthermore, a special police team has reportedly traveled to Bengaluru to pursue other potential suspects, signaling a widening scope for the investigation. Authorities are currently exploring whether there was internal collusion, with the Minister noting that the potential involvement of department staff is a primary line of inquiry.
Suspicion of Insider Involvement
Minister Nirmal Kumar has expressed concern that the theft may be linked to recent administrative actions. The board recently suspended several high-ranking officials, including the Technical Director and the Chief Financial Controller of the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL). The Minister suggested that the timing of the theft raises questions about a possible connection to these disciplinary measures, as the missing devices contained sensitive information regarding tenders, procurement records, and ongoing vigilance investigations.
While the loss of data is being treated with the utmost seriousness, the Minister provided some reassurance to the public. He confirmed that critical information, including tender-related details, was not lost permanently as the department maintains backup copies. Efforts are currently being made to restore the data through these digital safeguards.
Policy Reforms and Transparency
The incident has intensified the state government’s push for greater transparency within the power sector. Minister Nirmal Kumar took the opportunity to reiterate allegations against former Minister V. Senthil Balaji regarding inflated tender estimations for transformer procurement. He emphasized that the government is now focused on streamlining policies to align tender estimates with actual market rates and manufacturer pricing.
Beyond the ongoing investigation, the Electricity Board is conducting a comprehensive audit of its wings across the state, including offices in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, to ensure the security of remaining digital and physical records. The Minister also announced that the department plans to launch a new website for solar power applications to reduce reliance on middlemen, and will begin publishing details on large-scale power outages to keep the public informed about causes and locations.
