Supply Chain Disruptions Leave Kerala’s Beef Industry Facing Severe Meat Shortage

An escalating crisis in the inter-state transit of cattle has led to skyrocketing prices and a two-day strike across four districts as traders protest mounting operational hurdles.

For thousands of households across Kerala, beef has long served as a primary and affordable source of protein. However, that dietary staple is increasingly slipping out of reach. A growing crisis in the supply chain—driven by the systematic blocking and seizure of transport vehicles in neighbouring states—has brought the state’s meat industry to a standstill, forcing traders in the central Travancore region to shutter their outlets in protest.

The Meat Industries Welfare Association has announced a two-day total shutdown of private meat outlets and slaughterhouses across Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha on June 6 and 7. This drastic measure follows weeks of mounting frustration among traders who rely on livestock transported from outside Kerala to meet the state’s consistent demand.

Regulatory Gaps and Extortion

At the heart of the issue is the volatile transit environment in states like Andhra Pradesh. Industry representatives note that while current regulations do not mandate health certificates for cattle transport, this lack of clarity has paradoxically fueled more frequent, unauthorized seizures. Traders allege that transporters are being targeted by both political groups and criminal elements who intercept trucks under various pretexts.

"There is no support coming from the authorities despite the growing challenges faced by the industry," says M.A. Salim, president of the Meat Industries Welfare Association. According to reports from the field, transporters are frequently coerced into paying significant sums to these groups just to secure passage. This "protection money" model has made the logistics of moving cattle increasingly untenable for small-scale operators.

Impact on Local Markets

The economic fallout is particularly visible in Kottayam, a district that stands as one of the state’s largest hubs for beef consumption alongside Malappuram and Ernakulam. Under normal circumstances, the region processes roughly 700 head of cattle per week, yielding a steady supply of meat. Current estimates suggest that volume has plummeted by more than 50 per cent due to the security risks on national highways.

As the supply crunch tightens, retail prices have seen a sharp upward trajectory. For many families in Kerala, this shift represents more than just an inconvenience; it marks the erosion of an essential, budget-friendly food source. As the industry awaits government intervention, traders warn that if the disruption in the transit states continues, the scarcity will only intensify in the coming weeks, potentially leaving meat markets empty and consumer prices at record highs.
