Operation Toofan: How Ernakulam is Turning the Heat on Drug Networks

A week into the state’s aggressive anti-narcotic crackdown, police have dismantled major supply chains and arrested scores across urban and rural pockets.

The heavy thud of police boots in the dead of night has become the new soundtrack for residents in Perumbavoor. As the state-wide 'Operation Toofan' gathers pace, the Ernakulam police are moving beyond standard patrols, deploying dog squads and special tactical teams to flush out narcotics. Within the first week alone, the sheer scale of the operation—spanning from high-end apartments in the city to migrant worker settlements in the rural belt—signals a departure from routine policing.

A City Under Surveillance

Since June 1, the Kochi city police have kept their foot on the gas, booking 129 cases under the NDPS Act and putting 145 people behind bars. The recovery statistics are stark: nearly 9 kilograms of ganja and over 443 grams of MDMA have been pulled off the streets. The most significant haul occurred on June 3, when a series of raids across 90 locations culminated in the arrest of three youths at a Kollamkudimugal apartment, where 437 grams of suspected MDMA were seized. These weren't just random checks; the city has deployed a dedicated squad tasked specifically with mapping narcotic hotspots and keeping known dealers under constant surveillance.

The Rural Frontline

If the city police are focused on synthetic drugs, the Ernakulam rural wing is tackling a complex web of peddling in industrial pockets like Perumbavoor. Under the guidance of District Police Chief K.S. Sudarshan and Additional SP Hardik Meena, a ‘special Toofan squad’ has been working around the clock. The urgency of these operations was highlighted after a viral video surfaced showing two youths injecting suspected heroin in a public space; police tracked the pair down almost immediately. Recent raids have also netted 34 kilograms of suspected ganja from four men allegedly smuggling the contraband from West Bengal, proving that authorities are now intercepting large-scale transit shipments as much as they are targeting street-level consumption.

Why It Matters

This intensity reflects a shift in how the state handles the drug menace. By targeting both the high-volume traffickers and the public consumption that plagues residential neighbourhoods, the police are attempting to break the cycle of supply and demand simultaneously. However, the reliance on intensive, high-visibility raids suggests a tactical pivot toward disruption rather than just investigation. The true test of Operation Toofan will not be the first-week numbers, but whether this momentum can be sustained without displacing the trade to quieter, peripheral areas. For now, the message from the force is clear: the era of easy, unchecked peddling in the district is under severe threat.
