Andhra Pradesh Sets Sights on Global Seafood Leadership with Smart Kakinada Fishing Harbour
Smart, integrated fishing harbour will come up at Kakinada, says Union Minister

A new multi-crore infrastructure push aims to transform the state’s aquatic value chain, cementing its role as the backbone of India’s burgeoning seafood export economy.
Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as the cornerstone of India’s ambitious "Blue Economy" as state and central authorities align on a massive infrastructure upgrade aimed at boosting seafood exports. During a two-day national workshop held in Visakhapatnam, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, announced a sanction of ₹72.42 crore to develop a "Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour" in Kakinada. This project, sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), is designed to modernize operations, providing berthing facilities for 423 vessels and catering to over 74,000 tonnes of annual landings, while creating over 12,000 employment opportunities.
A Strategic Roadmap for Exports
The push for modernization comes as India eyes a record-breaking export target of ₹1 lakh crore. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, speaking at the event, highlighted the state’s dominance in fisheries production, stressing that the future of the sector lies in global competitiveness, sustainability, and strict traceability. "To compete on a global scale, we must move beyond traditional methods and embrace a brand identity built on quality," the Chief Minister noted, calling for a seamless integration of institutional support from bodies like MPEDA and NABARD.
Expanding the Infrastructure Network
The Kakinada project is part of a broader, state-wide strategy to overhaul marine logistics. Infrastructure Minister B.C. Janardhana Reddy recently confirmed that the Kakinada Gateway Port is on track for completion by June 2026. With a massive investment of ₹2,621 crore, the port aims to bridge the gap in cargo handling, featuring dedicated berths for coal and general goods. Parallel to this, the Uppada fishing harbour—an earlier commitment involving an outlay of ₹361 crore—is nearing completion, with officials confirming a five-month timeline to finish the final phases of construction.
Technology and Trade Facilitation
At the ministerial level, there is a concerted push to simplify the export journey. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal emphasized that beyond physical ports, the government is prioritizing advanced quarantine and allied facilities, specifically in Visakhapatnam. These technical upgrades are intended to facilitate smoother trade flows and ensure that Indian marine products meet the rigorous sanitary standards of international markets.
As these projects gain momentum, the convergence of civil aviation, food processing, and port authorities suggests a shift toward a more integrated "aqua-corridor." By linking road, rail, and sea transport, the administration hopes to reduce the logistical bottlenecks that have historically hampered the value-addition process. With both the Kakinada and Uppada developments, the region is rapidly evolving into a sophisticated hub capable of handling the increasing volume of exports while providing a sustainable livelihood for the local fishing community.
