Fresh Arms Cache Recovered in Sandeshkhali as STF Detains Four Linked to Sheikh Shahjahan

The West Bengal Special Task Force has unearthed a significant stockpile of firearms and ammunition in Sandeshkhali, deepening the legal crisis surrounding the incarcerated TMC leader.

The long-simmering tensions in Sandeshkhali have taken a volatile turn as the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) launched a series of raids, uncovering a substantial cache of illegal arms and ammunition. This latest operation, conducted throughout Saturday, resulted in the arrest of four individuals with direct ties to Sheikh Shahjahan, the controversial TMC strongman currently in custody for his role in the January attack on Enforcement Directorate officials.

A Trail of Hidden Weapons

The investigation began after authorities interrogated three initial suspects, all close associates of the former TMC leader. Their testimonies led police to an abandoned property in Sarberia, where five firearms were seized. The breakthrough, however, came during subsequent searches in a local village where investigators recovered 13 additional weapons and 56 live cartridges buried deep beneath a fish farm. In total, the haul includes 10 long-range firearms and eight smaller handguns, suggesting a sophisticated network of procurement that authorities believe was managed under the direction of Shahjahan.

As police teams continue to canvas the region, the operation has drawn in wider investigative agencies. While the STF has spearheaded the recovery, reports indicate that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also been active in the area, even calling in an NSG bomb disposal squad to safely manage suspected explosives discovered during the search.

The recovery has ignited a fierce political firestorm across Bengal. Opposition leaders, including BJP candidates, have seized on the discovery to intensify their criticism of the state government’s handling of law and order in the region. Conversely, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has dismissed the findings as a politically motivated "ploy" orchestrated by the opposition, with party representatives formally writing to the state’s chief election officer to protest the timing and nature of the raids.

Local villagers, particularly women, had previously led mass protests demanding accountability for widespread allegations of land grabbing and sexual exploitation—charges that ultimately led to the arrest of Shahjahan and his close aides, Shibaprasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar.
