A fatal delivery: Philadelphia police offer $20,000 reward for leads in Anshul Kuncha’s murder

The tragic death of 28-year-old Anshul Kuncha, who was lured to a vacant Philadelphia apartment and shot, has sparked renewed fears among the Indian diaspora.

The simple act of delivering a pizza order turned into a death trap for Anshul Kuncha, a 28-year-old Indian national pursuing his MBA in the United States. In the early hours of Friday, June 5, 2026, Kuncha was found shot in the back of the head at the Raymond Rosen Homes in North Philadelphia. Authorities believe the victim, who hailed from Hyderabad, was deliberately lured to a vacant property on the 2300 block of Edgley Street under the guise of a three-pizza delivery order.

Philadelphia police are now offering a $20,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing. Chief Inspector Scott Small revealed that physical evidence suggests a cold-blooded execution; three spent shell casings were found just inches from where Kuncha collapsed, indicating the shooter stood in close proximity to the victim. Surveillance footage from the Philadelphia Housing Authority captured Kuncha walking toward the unit, followed by two individuals in dark clothing, one of whom carried a backpack.

The Consulate General of India in New York has acknowledged the tragedy, stating they are in touch with the family and providing all necessary assistance to repatriate their loved one. For the family back in Hyderabad, the loss has been shattering. Kuncha's sister has since made a desperate, public plea to parents in India: "Think twice before sending kids to the US." Her warning echoes a growing sense of vulnerability among Indian families who view the U.S. as a land of opportunity, only to find their children facing unpredictable violence.

The Bigger Picture: A Pattern of Risk

This incident is not an isolated crime but part of a troubling trend that frequently hits the headlines in Indian media. For thousands of Indian students, the path to a better life is often paved with high-risk, low-wage jobs like food delivery or convenience store night shifts to fund their expensive education. When these students fall victim to targeted violence or street crime, the shockwaves resonate deeply in Indian households, often forcing a wider national debate on the safety of Indian students abroad.

The luring of a delivery worker to a vacant residence suggests a calculated predatory act, rather than a random mugging gone wrong. As the Philadelphia police investigation continues, the focus remains on the two suspects caught on camera. While the $20,000 reward may encourage witnesses to come forward, it does little to soothe the anxieties of a community that is increasingly questioning the price of the "American Dream."
