Weather Update June 6: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Uttarakhand and Odisha Amid Sharp Seasonal Contrasts

While residents in the northern mountainous regions are bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall, parts of Odisha continue to grapple with oppressive heat, illustrating the complexity of the pre-monsoon and early monsoon transition.

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh: The Wet Spell Continues

The Dehradun meteorological centre has sounded a high alert for Uttarakhand, forecasting significant precipitation across both hilly and plain districts over the next 72 hours. Scientist Rohit Thapliyal confirmed that regions including Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Dehradun, and Bageshwar are expected to face thunderstorms, lightning, and hail, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 kilometres per hour. A yellow alert remains in effect for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar as authorities urge caution.

Across the border, Himachal Pradesh is experiencing a similar trend. Local reports confirm that the wet spell is projected to persist through June 11. Recent data highlights the intensity of the current activity, with Kasauli recording 33 mm of rain and Shimla receiving 32.8 mm. Local weather offices have issued yellow warnings for Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi, where residents have been cautioned against gusty winds and potential infrastructure disruptions caused by the sudden storms.

Heatwave Conditions Persist in Odisha

In a sharp contrast to the rainfall alert in the north, Odisha is currently experiencing a severe heatwave. Friday’s records indicate that at least eight locations, including the capital Bhubaneswar, registered daytime temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius. Boudh emerged as the state’s hottest district, peaking at 41.7 degrees Celsius. However, relief may be on the horizon, as the IMD predicts that the current heat will likely break, with forecasts pointing toward incoming thunderstorms and rainfall across the state over the next four days.
