UPSC Bolsters Exam Integrity with Real-Time Face Authentication Technology
UPSC implements face authentication for prelims exam

The Union Public Service Commission successfully deployed a mobile-based face verification system for over 500,000 aspirants during the 2026 preliminary exams to eliminate impersonation risks.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) reached a significant milestone in its efforts to fortify the security of the civil services and Indian Forest Service examination process. During the preliminary examination held on May 24, 2026, the commission successfully integrated a real-time face authentication system across all 2,072 testing venues nationwide. This technological upgrade ensures that the individual arriving to write the paper is the same person who submitted the application, effectively closing loopholes that could facilitate impersonation or other forms of malpractice.
Seamless Integration Through Mobile Technology
Rather than relying on expensive, specialized hardware that could complicate logistics, the commission opted for an accessible approach. The authentication application was designed to run on any standard Android smartphone. By allowing invigilators to utilize their own devices, the UPSC significantly reduced hardware costs and streamlined the deployment process. With more than 7,000 invigilators monitoring the entry of approximately 550,000 candidates, the system proved its scalability and efficiency under high pressure.
Efficiency at Scale
One of the primary concerns with implementing new security checks during a high-stakes examination is the potential for delays. However, the commission noted that the application was highly effective in maintaining a smooth flow of students into the halls. On average, the face authentication process took between six and eight seconds per candidate. During peak entry hours, the system handled an impressive volume of roughly 12,000 verifications every minute, ensuring that queues remained manageable at centers across the country.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
The development of this tool was a collaborative effort, with technical support provided by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar highlighted that the entire solution was developed in-house. To ensure a smooth rollout, the commission established a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that was shared with district authorities and venue administrators well in advance.
Multiple rounds of training were conducted to prepare invigilators for the new protocol. According to provisional data, while over 800,000 individuals applied for the civil services cycle, approximately 5.49 lakh candidates appeared on the day of the test. By verifying each of these individuals before they entered the hall, the UPSC has set a new standard for conducting large-scale, fair, and secure competitive testing in India.
