Tragic accident in Delhi’s Holambi Khurd: 6-year-old girl dies as brick pillar collapses

A makeshift swing turned into a site of tragedy on Saturday after a dilapidated structure gave way, claiming the life of a young child in the Narela industrial area.

A peaceful afternoon in the Metro Vihar area of Delhi’s Holambi Khurd turned into a scene of mourning on Saturday when a six-year-old girl was killed in a freak structural collapse. The child had been playing on a makeshift swing when the old brick pillar, which supported the rope, suddenly buckled under the stress.

The local police, who were initially alerted to reports of a girl falling into a drain, arrived at the scene to find the minor unresponsive on the surface of a covered safety tank near the collapsed wall. Officers from the Narela Industrial Area station confirmed that the victim was immediately rushed to the Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was declared brought dead upon arrival.

Investigation into the collapse

Preliminary findings by the police suggest the incident was purely accidental, with no evidence of foul play surfacing during the initial inquiry. Investigators observed that the rope used for the swing was tied between a metal grill on a wall and a brick pillar that had fallen into a state of severe disrepair.

“The brick pillar appeared old and unstable, clearly incapable of bearing the dynamic weight and stress caused by the swinging motion,” a senior police official stated. The force of the collapse struck the child, resulting in fatal injuries that proved insurmountable.

Community in shock

As news of the tragedy spread, residents of Metro Vihar gathered at the site, reflecting the deep concern within the community regarding the upkeep of aging structures in the locality. The victim’s body has since been transferred to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital in Jahangirpuri for post-mortem proceedings.

While the police have recorded statements from witnesses and the grieving family, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are continuing to examine all aspects of the site to ascertain whether any further negligence played a role in the instability of the structure. For now, the loss of the young girl has left the neighborhood in a state of profound shock.
