A dramatic police operation in Howrah saw a local TMC leader apprehended after he attempted to evade arrest by concealing himself beneath a heap of garments.

The pursuit of Brahmananda Chakraborty, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) functionary in West Bengal’s Howrah district, reached an unconventional conclusion on Saturday. Following allegations of extortion and involvement in post-poll violence dating back to 2021, Chakraborty was found by police hiding beneath a massive pile of sarees inside a godown belonging to the state government organization, "Tantuja," in Amta.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, began when local BJP workers spotted the accused at the Amta Block 1 showroom. Upon receiving information from the public, Amta police launched a search operation at the facility. The apprehension occurred when officers noticed a distinct movement beneath a stack of textiles. Suspecting someone was concealed within, police directed staff to clear the shelves, eventually uncovering a trembling Chakraborty who had attempted to use the sarees as a makeshift camouflage.

A Pattern of Unrest and Accountability

Chakraborty’s arrest comes against a backdrop of intensifying public anger across West Bengal regarding "cut money"—illegal commissions allegedly demanded by party functionaries from beneficiaries of government schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Reports suggest that as public pressure mounts, several local leaders have been forced to account for these funds. In a separate instance, a TMC councillor in Mathabhanga recently returned Rs 1 lakh in alleged extortion money, claiming she was pressured by higher-ranking party leadership.

The desperation displayed by those accused of corruption has led to a series of bizarre and often violent scenes. Earlier this month, another TMC leader, Shahidul Miah, was pulled from under a bed by police following similar complaints. In more volatile incidents, local residents have taken the law into their own hands, parading and even tonsuring leaders accused of misappropriating welfare funds, highlighting a growing disconnect between local party workers and the communities they serve.

Lingering Legal Questions

Beyond the recent "cut money" allegations, Brahmananda Chakraborty faces scrutiny for his alleged role in the political violence that gripped the region following the 2021 Assembly elections. Police confirmed that he was handed over to the Pendro police station for further questioning. The situation remains sensitive, particularly as the whereabouts of Udaynarayanpur MLA Samir Panja—described by sources as a close associate of the arrested leader—remain unknown, with reports indicating he is currently absconding.

The incident has sparked significant debate regarding the efficacy of local governance and the accountability of political functionaries. As law enforcement continues to investigate the multiple complaints filed against Chakraborty, the viral footage of his failed attempt to vanish into a pile of sarees has become a lightning rod for broader discussions on political corruption and the rising tide of public resentment against local power structures in rural Bengal.
