The Life Cut Short: TISS Graduate Among Those Who Perished in Deadly Delhi Fire

A promising career and a bright future were silenced in an instant when a devastating blaze at a South Delhi guesthouse claimed the life of 25-year-old Shrutika Baranwal.

The tragic fire that tore through the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast in Hauz Rani has left 21 families mourning, casting a harsh spotlight on the city's crumbling infrastructure and lax safety norms. Among the victims was Shrutika Baranwal, a brilliant postgraduate from Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Having recently secured her first professional role, the 25-year-old had traveled to the national capital for a work-related meeting, a trip that was meant to be the springboard for a long and impactful career.

Baranwal, who hailed from Bokaro, Jharkhand, had earned her Master’s degree in Water Policy and Governance. She had recently landed a position at the Rubber, Chemical and Polymer Skill Development Council, a milestone her peers described as the beginning of a "wonderful journey." She was preparing to check out of the accommodation when the facility, now at the center of a probe into building safety violations, became engulfed in flames.

The harrowing final moments of her life were shared with a friend and TISS batchmate, Aman Singh. According to accounts, Baranwal was on a phone call with Singh when the fire broke out. The line went dead amidst her screams, leaving Singh in a desperate state of panic. His subsequent attempts to reach her failed, prompting him to coordinate with friends and local authorities to locate her. It was through this frantic search that the reality of the Delhi fire—and the loss of his friend—was confirmed.

A City Under Scrutiny

This tragedy is far from an isolated incident. The blaze has ignited a fierce debate regarding the proliferation of "illegal basements" and unauthorized guesthouses operating in residential areas of Delhi. Reports suggest that the facility lacked essential fire safety protocols, including a valid Fire NOC, and suffered from poor accessibility, with limited entry and exit points. For many, this event serves as a grim reminder of why urban planning and the enforcement of building codes are matters of life and death, rather than mere administrative checklists.

The impact of the tragedy has rippled far beyond the capital. In her hometown of Bokaro, the Baranwal family is grappling with an unimaginable loss. The cremation of the young scholar was held recently, drawing local attention to the human cost of the disaster. As investigations into the Flourish Stay incident continue, the focus remains on the systemic failures that allowed a place of transit to become a death trap.

While authorities promise a renewed examination of safety norms, for the family and friends of the TISS graduate, the loss remains permanent. The fire did not just claim a building; it extinguished the dreams of a young woman who had worked tirelessly to reach the professional heights she was finally beginning to touch.
