Purnia road tragedy: Truck driver killed, assistant critical after high-speed collision near Barsouni toll

A routine transit turned fatal on Tuesday evening when a speeding container rammed into a stationary hyva truck near the Barsouni toll plaza in Bihar's Purnia district.

The accident occurred in the Dagarua police station area, leaving the local transport corridor in shock. According to information gathered from the site and local police reports—a primary source for this original article—the victim, Mukaddar Hussain, was behind the wheel of a hyva truck when the incident took place. A speeding container, approaching from behind, slammed into his vehicle with such force that the hyva’s cabin was completely mangled, pinning Hussain inside.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the severity of the wreckage. Local residents and police officers spent significant time cutting through the mangled metal to extract the victims. Hussain, a resident of Ajna village in Jharkhand’s Pakur district, was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Purnia, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The assistant driver, Sheikh Usman, who survived the collision, remains in critical condition at the same facility. In his account to authorities, Usman described the sudden impact of the container, which caught their vehicle unaware. The force of the crash not only destroyed the cabin but also inflicted severe trauma on the occupants.

Police probe and official response

Divya Kumari, the trainee SDPO and acting SHO of Dagarua, confirmed the fatality and stated that legal procedures, including an autopsy, are underway. While the police are currently focusing on the post-mortem and informing the grieving family members, they have launched an investigation into the driver of the container.

This tragic event, covered in detail by Hindustan, highlights the persistent dangers on the arterial highways connecting Bihar to the neighbouring regions, including those heading toward West Bengal. These routes see a high volume of heavy vehicle movement, often leading to high-stakes accidents when safety protocols or speed limits are ignored.

Why it matters: The safety deficit on heavy-transit routes

This incident is a grim reminder of the vulnerability of drivers navigating long-haul routes. The stretch near the Barsouni toll plaza has become a flashpoint for such accidents, often involving high-speed collisions during late hours. For the logistics and transport sector, the "bigger picture" remains clear: despite better road infrastructure, the lack of rigorous enforcement regarding speed regulation and mandatory rest breaks for drivers continues to claim lives.

As the investigation progresses, the local administration faces the recurring challenge of ensuring that heavy vehicles adhere to lane discipline and speed norms. For now, the focus remains on the medical recovery of the survivor and the procedural handling of a case that has once again left a family devastated by the unpredictable nature of highway transit.
