Stranded in Rohtas: Technical Snag Leaves Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express Stuck for Hours

A journey meant for speed turned into a test of patience on Friday evening as a technical failure halted the premium train near Shivसागर Road station.

The pride of India’s rail modernization, the Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888), faced an unexpected ordeal on Friday evening. Passengers travelling from Varanasi to Ranchi found their journey abruptly interrupted at approximately 5:42 PM near the Shivसागर Road station in Bihar’s Rohtas district. What was supposed to be a seamless, high-speed transit quickly transformed into a four-hour wait as the train’s engine succumbed to a critical technical fault.

As the evening wore on, the interior of the train became a hub of anxiety. While railway staff and RPF personnel, including Inspector Rakesh Ranjan, arrived on-site to manage the situation, the frustration among the commuters was palpable. The incident, documented in this original article, highlights the vulnerability of even our most advanced rolling stock when faced with unforeseen mechanical failures in remote stretches.

The Long Road to Recovery

Railway technical teams initially attempted to fix the engine on the tracks, but the damage proved too significant for a quick field repair. Realizing that the train could not proceed under its own power, officials were forced to arrange for a relief engine from the Pandit दीनदयाल उपाध्याय (DDU) junction.

The logistical delay meant that the Vande Bharat Express remained stationary for over four hours. It was only after the replacement engine was attached and rigorous safety checks were completed that the train finally resumed its journey toward Ranchi at 10:05 PM. Railway officials maintained that passenger safety was the overriding priority, necessitating the lengthy, albeit frustrating, delay.

Why it matters

This incident serves as a reality check for the ambitious expansion of India’s semi-high-speed rail network. While the Vande Bharat Express has revolutionized travel times and passenger comfort, the primary challenge remains the maintenance infrastructure required to support high-tech trains across diverse geographical zones.

When premium trains experience prolonged technical failure, it doesn't just disrupt a single schedule; it ripples across the punctuality metrics of the entire network. As the government continues to roll out more of these trains, the focus must shift from simply increasing the number of services to bolstering the emergency response capabilities along these routes. Identifying the root cause of this failure will be critical to ensuring that the brand’s reputation for reliability matches its reputation for speed.
