The government has officially kicked off an ambitious rollout of high-blend ethanol fuel in major cities, pairing price incentives with new vehicle launches to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy.

India’s energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as state-run oil marketing companies begin the rollout of E85 fuel—a blend containing 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. To encourage adoption, the government has set the price at a discount of Rs 20 per litre compared to standard E20 petrol. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced this initiative while inaugurating a dispensing facility in Delhi, where the fuel has been priced at Rs 82.12 per litre.

The Rs 20 price cut is a strategic move designed to offset the lower energy density of ethanol, which provides less mileage per litre than pure petrol. While E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol, will remain the standard for most existing vehicles on Indian roads, the introduction of E85 represents a concerted effort to scale up bio-fuel consumption.

Scaling the Infrastructure

The initial phase of the rollout targets key urban centers, including Delhi-NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur. The government is starting with a pilot network of 50 to 100 dispensing stations, with aggressive plans to expand this footprint. According to official projections, the number of stations will grow to 500 by the end of 2026, reaching a pan-India network of 5,000 stations by the end of 2027.

Beyond building infrastructure, the ministry is actively examining supportive policy frameworks to ensure the transition remains affordable for the average consumer. This policy shift is expected to reduce India’s reliance on crude oil imports while simultaneously providing a boost to the domestic agricultural sector, which supplies the feedstock for ethanol production.

Automotive Industry Alignment

The push for cleaner fuel is being mirrored by the automotive sector, which is moving quickly to introduce flex-fuel technology. Maruti Suzuki has already showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel, marking the arrival of India's first E85-compatible car. Simultaneously, Hero MotoCorp has moved to capture the two-wheeler market by launching India’s first 100cc flex-fuel motorcycle.

These developments signal a shift in the mass-market automotive strategy, as major manufacturers begin preparing for a future where vehicles can run on varying percentages of ethanol. As the government continues to refine its ethanol roadmap, the combination of widespread dispensing stations and compatible, locally manufactured vehicles is expected to be the cornerstone of India’s move toward a sustainable, bio-fuel-driven transport economy.
