The landscape of household expenses shifted once again this June as oil marketing companies implemented a nationwide hike of ₹29 on every 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder. While the revision takes effect immediately, the final retail cost varies across regions due to state-specific levies and logistical transportation charges. For the average Indian family, this adjustment translates into an estimated additional annual expenditure of nearly ₹348, a figure that analysts warn could further strain the finances of middle- and lower-income households.

Regional Price Disparities

As consumers move to check the latest rates, they will find significant differences based on their geography. In the capital city of Delhi, the price now stands at ₹942.00, while residents in Mumbai face a slightly lower rate of ₹941.50. Other major metros have seen similar upward adjustments: Kolkata now retails at ₹968.00 per cylinder, and Chennai consumers are paying ₹957.50. Prices in other hubs vary, with Patna reaching a high of ₹1,031.50, while Bengaluru remains relatively lower at ₹915.50. Because of these fluctuations, oil companies advise customers to verify the specific cost through their local distributor or the official marketing portal before booking a refill.

The Broader Energy Crunch

This shift in domestic energy costs is not an isolated incident. Industry insiders have indicated that the price hike was deemed necessary by state-run firms to partially offset the mounting losses incurred from international energy market volatility. Despite this Rs 29 increase, experts point out that retailers are still absorbing a significant portion of the global price surge, meaning the full impact of international crude trends has not yet been passed on to the end-user. The rising cost of cooking gas coincides with a broader inflationary trend, as petrol and diesel prices have collectively risen by ₹7.50 per litre since mid-May, and compressed natural gas (CNG) has seen a climb of approximately ₹6 per kg.

Commercial vs. Domestic Burden

The impact of these revisions extends beyond the kitchen. The market differentiates sharply between domestic and commercial users, with 19 kg cylinders seeing distinct pricing structures. For instance, while a domestic user in Delhi pays ₹942.00, a commercial establishment in the same city is now paying ₹3,113.50 for a 19 kg cylinder. Businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and food service sectors, are under increasing pressure to manage these higher overheads.
