Emergency Evacuation Ordered in Vilangad as Heavy Rains Heighten Landslide Risk

District authorities in Kozhikode have initiated a mass relocation of residents from vulnerable slopes and riverbanks following an urgent landslide alert.

The Kozhikode district administration has ordered the immediate evacuation of residents across several hilly pockets in the Vadakara taluk as relentless, heavy rainfall raises the threat of potential slope failures. District Collector M.S. Madhavikutty, acting in her capacity as the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, issued the directive on Friday, June 5, specifically targeting the high-risk regions of Vilangad, Valook, Malayangad, Urutty, and Panniyeri.

Coordinated Response and Relief Efforts

To manage the logistics of this large-scale evacuation, officials have designated the Vadakara Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) as the nodal officer, supported by the Vadakara tahsildar. The mandate requires local officials from the Vanimel and Narippatta grama panchayats to rapidly identify and prepare schools and public buildings as temporary relief camps. These shelters are being equipped with essential amenities, including continuous medical support, electricity, sanitation, and food supplies, to accommodate those displaced from areas prone to historical landslide activity.

Restrictions and Security Protocols

Beyond the physical relocation of residents, the administration has implemented strict mobility controls to prevent accidents in treacherous terrain. Night travel on hill roads within the Vilangad region is now prohibited between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., except for emergency services. The District Police Chief (Kozhikode Rural) has been tasked with deploying personnel to maintain security at both the abandoned homes and the newly established relief camps, ensuring that law and order are maintained during the crisis.

Compliance and Legal Warning

The gravity of the situation has prompted authorities to adopt a firm stance on public cooperation. Collector Madhavikutty has issued a clear warning that any individual found violating these safety directives or obstructing evacuation efforts will face legal action under Sections 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Officials have urged the public to ignore rumors and rely exclusively on official advisories to ensure community safety.

This localized emergency in Kozhikode comes amid a broader pattern of severe weather patterns across the country, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has separately flagged red alerts for heavy storms in other regions, including Delhi-NCR. For residents of the hilly zones in Kerala, the coming days remain critical as saturation levels in the soil increase the instability of slopes, making the current evacuation measures a vital precaution against loss of life.
