Delhi Government Announces ₹10 Lakh Compensation Following Fatal Malviya Nagar Fire

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has pledged financial support for the victims of the recent blaze as the administration vows to clamp down on building safety violations.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a relief package of ₹10 lakh for the families of each of the 21 individuals who lost their lives in the tragic fire that engulfed a bread-and-breakfast establishment in Malviya Nagar earlier this week. During her visit to Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket on Thursday, the Chief Minister confirmed that an additional ₹5 lakh would be provided to those who sustained serious injuries during the incident.

The fire, which broke out on Wednesday morning, resulted in significant casualties, including 12 foreign nationals from countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Cameroon, and Libya. Currently, 17 injured survivors are undergoing intensive treatment at the hospital, with medical teams working to stabilize several patients who initially required ventilator support. The government has committed to covering all medical expenses and is working closely with hospital authorities to ensure the highest standard of care.

Accountability and Administrative Reform

Addressing the media after her hospital visit, the Chief Minister acknowledged that “corruption and negligence” within certain departments have hindered the city’s safety protocols. Ms. Gupta expressed her firm resolve to hold those responsible for the tragedy accountable, stating that the government would spare no building owner or official found to be in violation of fire safety norms.

To address the underlying issues of urban planning and safety, the Chief Minister is set to chair a high-level meeting this Friday. The discussion will focus on curbing unauthorized constructions and implementing more rigorous regulatory frameworks to prevent future disasters. She emphasized that these measures are essential to establishing Delhi as a safe capital for both residents and visitors.

Supporting the Victims and Their Families

Beyond the financial aid, the government is prioritizing the logistical needs of the affected families. Officials have been instructed to facilitate the dignified and swift transport of the deceased to their respective home states and countries. Coordination with foreign missions is already underway to assist the families of the international victims.

The Chief Minister also took a moment to commend the local community in Malviya Nagar, specifically highlighting residents who risked their own safety to assist in rescue efforts. She has directed the local administration to formally identify these individuals to ensure their bravery is properly recognized by the state.
