California Airport Security Breach: Man Arrested After Attempting to Board with Explosive Device

Federal authorities have apprehended a 49-year-old individual at Sacramento International Airport after he allegedly attempted to pass through security with a viable explosive.

Security operations at the Sacramento International Airport were disrupted over the weekend when officials apprehended a local man carrying a collection of alarming items. The 49-year-old suspect, who was wearing latex gloves and a scarf to obscure his identity, was stopped while attempting to navigate a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint. Prosecutors have now formally charged the man with the unlawful possession of explosive materials within an airport environment.

A Viable Threat

According to statements from federal prosecutors, the primary concern was a small, cylindrical object found in the man's possession. The device, which resembled a cardboard tube the size of a toilet paper roll, was equipped with a green fuse. Bomb technicians conducted an assessment of the item and confirmed that the internal powder and the fuse were both energetic and viable.

US Attorney Eric Grant noted the severity of the situation, stating that the device possessed enough power to inflict structural damage. Had the mechanism detonated near a window on a pressurized aircraft at cruising altitude, it could have compromised the cabin pressure, posing a critical danger to the flight. To manage the immediate threat, officers utilized a blast suppression blanket to secure the area until the object was safely removed.

Suspicious Equipment and Communication

The discovery raised significant alarm due to the additional items found in the man's carry-on. Along with the explosive device, the individual was carrying five separate cell phones. One of these phones was reportedly configured with a 15-minute countdown timer, while another displayed a text message suggesting an external party was awaiting a call. Investigators also recovered a torch lighter, a knife, and a quantity of zip ties.

Before his arrest on Saturday, the suspect had reportedly engaged in a series of disjointed, "rambling" phone conversations with the FBI. In these calls, he claimed to be the target of threats and intimidation. Following his court appearance in Sacramento this Wednesday, his public defender, Meghan McLoughlin, indicated that the legal process would eventually allow for a more comprehensive narrative to emerge, stating that there is often more to these cases than the government’s initial allegations.
