Amritsar on Edge: Pro-Khalistan Slogans and Bhinderanwale Posters Surface at Akal Takht

As the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star passes, security forces maintain a heavy presence in Amritsar following reports of demonstrations within the Golden Temple complex.

The 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star—the 1984 Indian military operation aimed at flushing out armed militants from the Golden Temple—was marked by a display of defiance in Amritsar on Saturday. Supporters gathered at the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism, to raise pro-Khalistan slogans and display posters of Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale, the influential leader of the Damdami Taksal who was killed during the 1984 conflict.

For many, this day remains a deeply emotive milestone in modern Indian history. Bhinderanwale, who headed the orthodox seminary founded by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, remains a polarizing and central figure in the discourse surrounding the events of June 1984. The presence of his imagery and slogans within the holiest of Sikh shrines during the anniversary proceedings served as a stark reminder of the lingering tensions that often characterize this time of year in Punjab.

A Massive Security Grid

In anticipation of potential unrest, the Punjab Police had established a comprehensive security grid across Amritsar and surrounding districts. Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha conducted a ground-level review of the deployments days prior, emphasizing the state's intent to maintain a peaceful atmosphere despite the sensitive nature of the anniversary.

The scale of the security operation was significant, involving approximately 4,000 police personnel. To bolster the local force, the state administration integrated 2,000 officers from outside the Amritsar district and deployed 30 gazetted officers to oversee the situation. Furthermore, five companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were stationed within city limits to serve as a secondary line of defense against any escalation.

Assessing the Climate

Speaking to the media during his pre-anniversary visit, SDGP Sinha highlighted the logistical challenges of the date. "The anniversary of Operation Blue Star is on June 6; in connection with this, numerous programs and events take place, creating a heightened and sensitive security environment," he noted.

While the authorities aimed for a controlled environment, the events that transpired at the Akal Takht indicate that the day continues to act as a flashpoint for political and religious sentiment. The combination of historical remembrance and contemporary advocacy remains a complex dynamic for law enforcement, as the state seeks to balance the rights of pilgrims and observers with the necessity of maintaining public order in one of India's most visited spiritual sites.
