Authorities in Uttarakhand have mandated the inclusion of Sanskrit on all public and private signboards in Haridwar to highlight the city's status as a centre for classical learning.

As Haridwar prepares to welcome millions of devotees for the Ardh Kumbh, the district administration has issued a directive making the use of Sanskrit mandatory on all public signage. Moving beyond the standard Hindi and English displays, the initiative aims to weave the state’s second official language into the daily visual landscape of the holy city, transforming navigation into a cultural experience for pilgrims and visitors.

A City-Wide Transformation

The scope of this mandate is comprehensive, covering both government and private infrastructure. According to Chief Development Officer Lalit Narayan Mishra, the new requirement applies to official department boards, traffic signs, highway information panels, bus and railway stations, and private educational or commercial establishments. By ensuring that information is presented in Sanskrit, officials intend to reinforce Haridwar’s unique identity as a hub for Vedic education and heritage.

Ensuring Linguistic Accuracy

Recognizing the complexities of the language, the administration has moved to prevent grammatical errors by establishing a dedicated support system. Vani Bhushan, principal of the Jay Bharat Sadhu Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee the transition. Additionally, the office of the Additional Director of Sanskrit Education will provide expert guidance to various departments, ensuring that the translations displayed on boards remain accurate and contextually appropriate.

Promoting Uttarakhand’s Heritage

For local scholars, the decision is a long-overdue acknowledgement of the region's academic foundation. Haridwar already hosts a university, an academy, and numerous colleges dedicated to the language, making the implementation of Sanskrit on signage a natural extension of its demographic and cultural character. Dr. Saraswati Pathak, a noted Sanskrit scholar, stated that the move provides fitting recognition to the city’s deep-rooted scholastic traditions, allowing it to stand out as a center of classical learning on the national stage.

Preparing for the Ardh Kumbh

The timing of this administrative shift is intrinsically linked to the Ardh Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. By integrating Sanskrit into the city’s layout, officials hope to provide a distinct, immersive environment for those arriving from across the country. As the administration works to finalize these signages, the project stands as a significant effort to preserve and promote traditional knowledge systems in the modern, public sphere.
