Following years of policy friction, the state administration has fast-tracked land clearances to revive massive rail connectivity and modernization efforts across West Bengal.

A significant deadlock involving infrastructure development in West Bengal appears to be nearing an end. Following a high-level coordination meeting between state officials and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government has moved to clear the path for stalled railway projects worth over ₹1 lakh crore. For years, these critical developments—ranging from suburban metro expansions to the construction of essential flyovers—had remained dormant due to bureaucratic friction and disputes over land acquisition.

Clearing the Logjam

The breakthrough comes as officials have been instructed to prepare a definitive calendar for the transfer of land to the railways, a move intended to bypass the administrative lethargy that previously hindered progress. During the deliberations, it was highlighted that more than 70 railway over-bridge and under-bridge projects had been trapped in a procedural limbo because the necessary No-Objection Certificates (NoCs) were withheld, despite the fact that these specific projects did not even require additional land acquisition. The state has now directed that these pending approvals be cleared within 48 hours to accelerate the pace of work.

Strategic Connectivity and National Security

Among the most vital initiatives awaiting a restart is the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project. This line is widely regarded as a cornerstone of both regional connectivity and national security, yet it had been effectively paralyzed for years due to the state’s inability to hand over a 20-acre parcel of land. With central funding secured, the focus has shifted to completing these high-priority corridors that connect remote areas to the broader national rail map.

A Shift in Centre-State Dynamics

The discourse surrounding these projects has been heavily colored by political history. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the previous administration frequently bypassed cooperative federalism, even taking disputes over projects like the Kolkata Metro extension at Chingrighata to the Supreme Court. This adversarial stance, according to state officials, contributed to the deterioration of relations between the state and the railway ministry. The current push seeks to pivot away from this history, with the Centre having already allocated ₹14,205 crore specifically for West Bengal’s railway sector for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Modernization on the Horizon

Beyond basic construction, the revitalized roadmap includes the ambitious Amrut Bharat Station Scheme, which seeks to modernize 102 railway stations across the state. This, alongside plans for 538 new flyovers and underpasses, represents the largest investment in West Bengal’s rail infrastructure in recent memory. By clearing the hurdles that stalled progress, the state aims to transform the commuting experience for millions of passengers while finally bringing previously neglected districts into the rail fold.
