UP News: Schools Reopen Only to Shut Again as Heatwave Forces Extension of Summer Break

In a sudden reversal of plans, the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department has extended summer vacations until June 24, leaving parents and school administrations scrambling.

Tuesday morning began with the familiar bustle of school gates swinging open across Uttar Pradesh. Teachers greeted students with a warm welcome, marking the end of the long summer hiatus. However, the relief was short-lived. By the evening, a formal directive from the Basic Education Department swept through, mandating that all primary and recognized schools remain shut for an additional period.

The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, confirms that the summer अवकाश (vacation) will now officially conclude on June 24. Students are set to return to their desks on June 25, marking the new start date for the academic session. This decision applies uniformly across all basic and recognized schools in the state, overriding the initial reopening schedule.

The Shift in Academic Planning

This development signals a structural change in how the state manages its academic calendar. Historically, the Basic Education Council pegged the summer break between May 20 and June 15. The new directive, however, codifies a more permanent adjustment: from here on, the summer break for schools under the council will officially span from May 20 to June 24.

While students get an extended reprieve from the sweltering heat, the burden of preparation falls on the staff. To ensure that classrooms are ready for a smooth transition on June 25, the order makes it mandatory for all teachers, shiksha mitras, and non-teaching staff to report for duty on June 22, 23, and 24. These three days are earmarked for administrative readiness and curriculum planning.

The Bigger Picture: Weather and Policy

Why does this matter? The decision reflects the growing challenge of balancing academic calendars with increasingly erratic weather patterns. Across the country, news outlets from AajTak to regional trackers like Eenadu have been highlighting a climate of extremes—ranging from severe floods in states like Rajasthan to the relentless heatwaves gripping the Hindi heartland.

This up news serves as a primary indicator of how state administrations are being forced to pivot in real-time. Whether it is responding to infrastructure pressures or public health safety, the volatility of the weather is dictating school policy more than ever before. While the sudden flip-flop between opening and closing schools might cause temporary inconvenience for parents, it underscores a reactive shift in governance, where student safety is being prioritized over rigid adherence to traditional academic calendars.
