Tragedy on Ferozepur Highway: Eight Killed as Family Journey for Last Rites Ends in Collision

A pre-dawn journey to immerse a loved one’s ashes turned into a catastrophe after a pickup vehicle collided with a trolley on the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway.

A somber pilgrimage turned into a scene of carnage early Saturday morning when a family from Jalalabad, traveling to perform the final rites for a deceased relative, met with a devastating road accident in Punjab. Eight people, including a minor girl, were killed, and nine others were left injured after their pickup tempo collided head-on with a trolley—locally referred to as a "ghoda"—near Janga Wala Mod in Ferozepur.

The group of roughly 20 relatives had departed from Jalalabad at approximately 4:00 AM, embarking on a 105-kilometer journey toward Harike Pattan to immerse the ashes of Puro Bai. The tragedy struck just an hour into their commute at around 5:00 AM near Husain Shah village. The impact was so severe that four passengers perished instantly. Despite emergency efforts, the death toll climbed to eight as four others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment.

Investigation and Road Safety Concerns

Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh, who inspected the accident site, described the event as deeply unfortunate. While initial findings suggest the driver of the trolley may be at fault, the SSP confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances. Legal action against the driver is pending the outcome of the probe. Meanwhile, the injured have been moved to various medical facilities, with some being referred to the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for specialized care.

The accident has reignited local frustration regarding the safety of the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway. Villagers living near the crash site identified the Janga Wala Mod as a "blind turn" that has historically been the site of numerous accidents. This stretch of road remains a significant point of concern for commuters, with residents demanding better signage and engineering modifications to prevent further loss of life.

Questions Over Vehicle Usage

Among the deceased were Ram Singh, the son of the late Puro Bai, and a relative named Mahinder Singh. Authorities are also investigating the nature of the transport involved; the vehicle utilized by the family was a pickup tempo, a class of goods carriage typically reserved for the transport of agricultural produce and merchandise rather than passenger transit. While officials have refrained from commenting on potential overloading, the tragedy underscores the persistent risks associated with using commercial goods vehicles for group travel across Punjab’s high-speed highway network.

As the state grapples with this heartbreaking loss, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of commuters on rural highways. Post-mortem examinations for the victims are currently being conducted as the families of the deceased begin the painful process of coordinating funerals—a final, unintended journey that has left the Jalalabad community in mourning.
