Tragedy at Kalladi: One Dead, Seven Missing After Massive Landslide Hits Wayanad Tunnel Project

Rescue operations are underway in Kerala as a catastrophic landslide buries a tunnel work site, leaving multiple workers trapped and the district on high alert.

The heavy rains lashing Kerala have turned deadly once again. A massive landslide struck the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project site near Kalladi in Wayanad district on Tuesday, leaving a trail of devastation. Local officials have confirmed that one person has died, while at least seven others are missing, feared trapped under a mountain of debris.

The site, located near the Meenakshi Bridge, has been the hub of construction for a critical tunnel road project intended to link the Malappuram and Wayanad districts. According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the earth gave way following intense rainfall, sending a cascade of sludge and debris onto the project site and blocking nearby roads.

A Race Against Time

Local residents were the first responders, managing to pull three people from the rubble before emergency services could navigate the treacherous, rain-slicked terrain. At least five others have been reported injured. The disaster hit near areas that are not just home to the construction crew but also house several residences and homestays, heightening fears that the casualty count could rise as rescue teams clear the site.

Police, fire, and rescue services are currently working alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A dedicated NDRF unit from Meenangadi was the first to be deployed, with reinforcement teams rushed in from Kozhikode to speed up the excavation. The scale of the debris has made the search operation exceptionally difficult, as responders work to stabilize the slope while searching for those still missing.

Why it Matters: The Fragility of the Western Ghats

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ecological fragility of the Western Ghats. The location of the disaster is uncomfortably close to Mundakkai, a region that suffered a devastating landslide in 2024. For the infrastructure sector, this tragedy raises urgent questions about the environmental cost of large-scale civil engineering in geologically sensitive zones.

As Kerala grapples with the fallout of the monsoon, the incident at the tunnel project site highlights the thin line between essential development and disaster vulnerability. The recurring nature of such collapses in the region suggests that standard safety protocols for mountain excavation may need a radical overhaul. Beyond the immediate rescue efforts, the administration faces the long-term challenge of balancing connectivity goals with the increasingly volatile climate reality of the Ghats.
