The Security Shuffle: Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi Get 'Z' Category Cover

Amidst the optics of moving out of a 20-year-old residence, the Bihar government reinstates security for the RJD patriarch and his wife.

The political corridors of Patna have been buzzing with a fresh round of maneuvering. Following weeks of intense friction and a high-profile eviction, the Bihar government has decided to restore 'Z' category security for former Chief Ministers Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi. This move comes hot on the heels of an emotionally charged week that saw the couple finally hand over the keys to their 10, Circular Road bungalow—a home they occupied for two decades—to the state’s building construction department.

The new security arrangement, as reported by sources, will involve a 22-person detail, including four to five National Security Guard (NSG) commandos and a dedicated bulletproof vehicle. While the decision is being framed as an administrative recalibration, it arrives after a month of persistent political friction. In early June, the administration had downgraded their protection from 'Z+' to SSG (Special Security Group) status, a move that prompted the couple to return their security detail in protest, triggering a massive outcry from RJD cadres who kept a round-the-clock vigil outside the Circular Road residence.

The Politics of Protection

The optics of this decision are as significant as the security itself. The state government’s move, spearheaded under the current leadership of Samrat Choudhary, follows intense pressure and public posturing. When the security was initially downgraded, the RJD labelled it a vindictive act of political vendetta. Conversely, the BJP and JD(U) maintained that the adjustment was merely the result of a standard, periodic security audit.

The situation grew volatile when Lalu Yadav was spotted moving in public without his usual security detail, a development the BJP used to argue that his threat perception had diminished. For the RJD, the issue was never just about the personnel; it was about the stature of their leaders and the perceived humiliation of their displacement from a long-held official residence.

Why it Matters: The Bigger Picture

This back-and-forth isn't just about police protection; it is a barometer for the state of political civility in Bihar. The 'Z' category reinstatement serves as a tactical cooling-off measure in a climate where every administrative move is scrutinized through the lens of power dynamics. By restoring this level of protection, the government is effectively closing a chapter on a messy eviction dispute, even as the RJD leadership prepares to shift base to their new, smaller allocation at 39 Harding Road.

As of late Friday, however, there was a notable gap between the political decision and the official paperwork. While the news of the 'Z' category restoration has dominated local discourse, the official notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs was still awaited. The Lalu-Rabri household has clarified that they are yet to receive any formal communication regarding the change, highlighting the uneasy tension that persists even when the government makes a conciliatory gesture.
