Tensions Escalate as Kuwait and Bahrain Intercept Hostile Iranian Missile and Drone Attacks

The skies over the Gulf turned volatile on Saturday as Kuwait and Bahrain activated their air defence systems to intercept a barrage of hostile missiles and drones. The coordinated strikes, which originated from Iranian territory, mark a significant escalation in the ongoing regional standoff. While local authorities in both nations reported the successful interception of the incoming threats, the incident has sent shockwaves through the Middle East, further destabilising a fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.

According to reports from Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) explicitly targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, both of which host American military personnel. The Iranian offensive appears to be a direct retaliation for earlier US military strikes on coastal radar sites, including one located on an island within the strategic Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the exchange, stating that seven ballistic missiles were launched by Iran during the operation.

Sovereignty and Regional Fallout

The Bahraini government was swift to condemn the aggression, characterising the strikes as a "blatant violation" of international law and a direct assault on the kingdom’s territorial sovereignty. In a strong statement, the Bahraini Foreign Ministry demanded an immediate halt to what it termed unjust Iranian aggression. Simultaneously, the Kuwaiti military confirmed that loud explosions heard by residents were the result of their own air defence systems engaging the incoming threats. Authorities in both countries have urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidance as the situation remains fluid.
