Ten days after the Karur tragedy: Vijay reaches out to bereaved families via video calls

As the political fallout of the Karur stampede continues, the TVK chief has begun direct, private outreach to those who lost loved ones, promising both financial relief and personal visits.

Ten days after the devastating September 27 stampede in Karur claimed 41 lives, the atmosphere within the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) remains somber. On Monday, October 6, party chief Vijay began a series of sensitive, private video calls to the families of the victims. For many, these calls were the first direct point of contact with the actor-turned-politician following the chaos that unfolded at his rally.

K. Sakthivel, a resident of Emoor Pudur who lost his wife, Priyadarshini, and 14-year-old daughter, Dharanika, in the tragedy, described the conversation as brief but poignant. “Vijay said the loss was unbearable and expressed his deep sorrow. He told me he would visit us soon,” Sakthivel shared. Similar accounts have emerged from other households; S. Sudhan, who lost his 22-year-old wife, Brindha, received a similar assurance from the TVK chief.

Managing the optics of grief

The party has been careful to maintain the sanctity of these interactions. Sources within the TVK core team, which is facilitating these calls, have requested that family members refrain from recording or photographing the conversations. This discretion appears to be a calculated effort to ensure that the outreach is perceived as a genuine gesture of empathy rather than a public relations exercise.

While the exact timeline for the disbursal of the promised solatium remains pending, party functionaries have informed the affected families that a formal announcement regarding the relief amount will be made shortly. For now, the focus remains on the logistical coordination of these calls, with cadres acting as the bridge between the grieving families and their leader.

The bigger picture: Why it matters

The Karur stampede has become a critical juncture for Vijay’s nascent political career. Beyond the human tragedy, the incident has drawn sharp legal scrutiny, including a recent reprimand from the Madras High Court and a plea to the Supreme Court—which was declined—regarding the rhetoric used by party leaders in the aftermath.

For a leader attempting to transition from the silver screen to the rough-and-tumble of Tamil Nadu politics, the handling of this crisis serves as an early test of crisis management and political accountability. The decision to personally contact every affected family is an attempt to anchor his leadership in a narrative of personal accountability, even as he faces mounting pressure from political rivals and legal observers to prove that his party can ensure safety and governance in the future. Whether this direct outreach effectively mitigates the political damage or is seen as too little, too late, will likely dictate the initial trajectory of the TVK’s presence in the state.
