From Delhi to Chennai: Leaders Pay Homage to Social Reformer Rettamalai Srinivasan

Vice President, Governor Arlekar, and CM Vijay lead tributes to the legendary campaigner for social justice on his birth anniversary.

The legacy of Rettamalai Srinivasan, a foundational figure in India’s struggle against caste-based discrimination, took center stage on Tuesday as top constitutional and political figures across the country marked his birth anniversary. From the national capital to the state capital of Chennai, leaders reflected on his lifelong commitment to the rights of the marginalized.

In New Delhi, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan paid floral tributes to the reformer, highlighting the incomparable nature of his crusade against untouchability. Simultaneously, in Tamil Nadu, the official discourse was steered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, both of whom underscored the relevance of Srinivasan’s work in the modern political landscape.

Governor Arlekar, via a statement released by the Lok Bhavan, described the late leader as a "visionary" whose work remains a guiding light for inclusive progress. CM Vijay took to social media to reiterate that Srinivasan was a pioneer of self-respect and equality, urging the state to uphold these ideals to build a society rooted in humanism.

The commemorative events in Chennai were marked by a significant turnout at Guindy, where a portrait of the late leader received floral offerings. Among those present to pay their respects were Ministers Aadhav Arjuna, P. Venkataramanan, Vanni Arasu, N. Marie Wilson, R. Kumar, and VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan.

The collective commemoration of Rettamalai Srinivasan serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of the early 20th-century social justice movements in Tamil Nadu. CM’s Relief Announcement

Beyond the commemorative events, the Chief Minister’s office was also focused on immediate governance duties. Following a tragic road accident near Panruti in Cuddalore district, CM Vijay announced a solatium for the victims. The relief package includes ₹3 lakh for the families of the four deceased, along with varying financial assistance for the seven severely injured and one person with minor injuries, all to be drawn from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
