The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed the event, pinning the epicentre near Punakha at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

While global monitoring agencies, including the GFZ, have estimated the magnitude at 5.6, other regional reports have suggested a slightly higher intensity, with some outlets recording the tremor at 5.8. Localised accounts from Assam indicate that the impact was significant enough to cause minor injuries in the state, though authorities have yet to confirm the total extent of the damage across the affected regions.

The tremors, which occurred at approximately 11:06 pm, were felt sharply by residents in North Bengal and various pockets of the Northeast. Social media platforms were quickly flooded with accounts from concerned citizens who reported furniture shaking and structural vibrations. The depth of 10 km—classified as a shallow earthquake—likely contributed to the intensity of the shaking felt at the surface.
