Southwest Monsoon Advances: Goa Soaked as Maharashtra Braces for Earliest Onset in Decades

The southwest monsoon has blanketed Goa and pushed into parts of Maharashtra, marking a significant, early surge across the Indian peninsula.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed this weekend that the southwest monsoon has made rapid progress, covering the entire state of Goa and extending its reach into southern Maharashtra. This advancement, which began with the monsoon’s arrival on June 4, signals a robust start to the rainy season. According to the latest satellite data, the Northern Limit of Monsoon is currently passing through key points including Devgad, Koppal, Ananthapuram, and Chennai, effectively cementing its presence across the west coast.

This year’s progression is notable for its speed, with reports suggesting that Maharashtra is poised for one of its earliest monsoon arrivals in over a decade. While some weather monitors track this as a 35-year record for early onset in the state, the IMD maintains a focused watch on the atmospheric conditions. An upper-air circulation persists off the Kerala coast, acting as a catalyst for strong monsoon wind drifts that are currently drenching the western coastline and driving the weather system inland.

Widespread Rainfall and Regional Impact

While the western flank of the monsoon gains momentum, the eastern arm is also making headway. The IMD indicates that the system has successfully moved into parts of Mizoram and Manipur, though the overall coverage across the northeast region remains marginally behind the historical pace. Conversely, areas like Kerala, Odisha, and Bihar have already reported very heavy rainfall since Friday, highlighting the intensity of the early-season precipitation.

The weather bureau has issued alerts for the coming five days, warning that heavy rainfall will persist over Kerala, Karnataka, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. As the system shifts, coastal Andhra Pradesh and north interior Karnataka are expected to face similar conditions through June 12. These heavy downpours are critical for agricultural sectors, though they bring the perennial risk of localized flooding in low-lying urban areas.

The Path Ahead

Over the next 48 to 72 hours, the monsoon is expected to advance further into Telangana, remaining segments of Tamil Nadu, and the southwest Bay of Bengal. Meteorological projections suggest a secondary phase of expansion a week from now, which will see the eastern arm pushing deeper into Chhattisgarh, Odisha, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.

The unusual timing of this year’s onset has drawn significant attention from climate experts. While the early arrival is a welcome sign for reservoir levels and crop cycles, weather agencies are closely monitoring the system for any risk of stalling—a phenomenon where the monsoon loses its kinetic energy mid-season. For now, however, the narrative is one of a strong, active, and fast-moving current sweeping across the Indian subcontinent.
