Security Withdrawal at Rabri Devi’s Residence Sparks Political Standoff in Bihar

The political temperature in Patna reached a boiling point this weekend following the sudden removal of security personnel from the 10 Circular Road residence of former Chief Ministers Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Amid the ongoing row, their son and Janshakti Janta Dal founder, Tej Pratap Yadav, dismissed claims that the family voluntarily surrendered their protection. Instead, he asserted that the security personnel themselves informed the household that their "command had been cut off," leaving the family with little choice but to ask them to vacate the premises.

The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of a broader administrative move by the Bihar government. Authorities have officially directed Rabri Devi to vacate the 10 Circular Road bungalow, which has been reallocated to the state’s Minister for Animal and Fisheries Resources, Nand Kishore Ram. Government officials have reiterated that the property, which has long been central to the political identity of the Yadav family, is strictly designated for current officeholders. The government notes that an alternative residence on Hardinge Road was previously provided to the former CM in her capacity as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council.

Conflicting Narratives on Security Protocol

Tej Pratap Yadav has accused the administration, specifically Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, of weaponizing security and housing issues to harass his family. He argued that the state leadership is prioritizing political vendettas over pressing governance issues, such as rising unemployment. "Rumours are being spread that security was sent away, but that's not the case," Tej Pratap said, emphasizing that the personnel were following direct orders from the state government to withdraw their presence.

Conversely, leaders within the ruling coalition have defended the move as a matter of standard procedure. Rajya Sabha MP and Rashtriya Lok Morcha president, Upendra Kushwaha, maintained that security details are determined by objective, professional threat assessments rather than political motivation. According to this view, the government is simply aligning protection levels with current needs and official protocols, a process that is not subject to the political influence alleged by the RJD.

RJD MLA Chandrashekhar Yadav challenged the current narrative, questioning the security arrangements afforded to other high-profile figures. "Lalu Yadav is a mass leader," he remarked, suggesting that the government should adopt a more transparent and consistent approach when evaluating the security requirements of prominent public figures compared to individuals in other sectors.

As the standoff continues, the transition of the 10 Circular Road residence remains a focal point of the dispute. While Rabri Devi has reportedly written to the Chief Minister regarding the situation, the government shows no signs of reversing its directive. For the residents, the removal of their security detail and the notice to vacate represent more than just administrative changes; they mark a significant shift in the power dynamics currently playing out in Bihar's capital.
