Authorities have launched a comprehensive verification exercise to map and scrutinise all structures within 15 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border.

A coordinated security operation is currently underway across Rajasthan’s frontier districts to identify and audit unauthorised constructions within 15 kilometres of the international border. Triggered by directives issued by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a recent high-level review in Bikaner, the initiative seeks to tighten surveillance in one of India's most sensitive strategic zones. The expansive exercise, which began roughly a week ago, is expected to conclude by October.

A Unified Intelligence Effort

This massive undertaking is not the work of a single department. Instead, it involves a multi-agency task force comprising the Border Security Force (BSF), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), military intelligence units, and the local district administration. By pooling resources, these agencies aim to create a comprehensive digital map of the border landscape, ensuring that no encroachment or suspicious development goes unnoticed.

Jaisalmer Collector Anupama Jorwal confirmed that the primary goal is to verify the legality of every structure built in the vicinity of the zero-line. "The survey will identify whether structures have been built after obtaining necessary permissions and whether any construction violates prescribed norms," she said. Beyond simple zoning violations, the administration is focusing on identifying the provenance of capital behind high-value projects, with security agencies tasked with uncovering the financial backers of any questionable development.

Strategic Sensitivity and Enforcement

The focus on Jaisalmer is particularly significant given its vast, porous desert terrain, which has historically been a point of concern for national security planners. Officials indicated that the move is part of a broader federal strategy to curb potential avenues for smuggling, infiltration, and other illicit operations. By cross-referencing ownership records with intelligence data, the government intends to neutralize any infrastructure that could theoretically support hostile activity.

While the current border-specific survey focuses on security and land-use legality, it arrives alongside a growing national conversation regarding land management. Recent reports have noted that discussions among various government officials and organizations—including the VHP—have also touched upon the necessity of auditing specific land categories, such as Waqf holdings, to address broader encroachment concerns. This convergence of security audits and land-use reviews highlights an increasing emphasis on the state’s ability to monitor and regulate property development in sensitive areas.

Residents in the border belt have been urged by local authorities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. As the October deadline for the survey approaches, the gathered data is expected to form the backbone of a refined security architecture, ensuring that the western frontier remains under strict observation by both the district administration and national intelligence agencies.
