Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy faces a massive political backlash after claiming he drew inspiration from Adolf Hitler to form the HYDRAA task force.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ignited a fierce political firestorm after claiming during a public event in Bengaluru that his government’s controversial anti-encroachment agency, HYDRAA, was directly inspired by Adolf Hitler. Speaking at a session hosted by The Hindu, Reddy asserted that "Hydra" was a favourite word of the Nazi dictator, alleging that Hitler utilized a core team by that name to carry out assassinations. This comparison, intended to showcase the perceived efficiency of his administration’s demolition drives in Hyderabad, has instead drawn intense condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which argues that the CM’s comments reveal an authoritarian streak.

A Controversial Justification

The Chief Minister’s remarks were aimed at defending the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), a body he claims has recovered assets worth ₹1.26 lakh crore by clearing illegal encroachments on water bodies. Describing the force as a high-stakes task force backed by 3,000 retired army personnel and a senior IPS officer, the CM appeared unfazed by the optics of his reference. "I have demolished like anything," Reddy declared, further equating his state-led demolition operations to those conducted in Israel and Iran.

Historical experts and political observers have noted that Reddy’s premise is factually flawed; there is no historical evidence linking Hitler to a unit called "Hydra." In fact, historical records identify "Operation Hydra" as a 1943 Royal Air Force mission launched against Nazi Germany to destroy its V-weapon production facilities. The juxtaposition of a modern-day Indian state agency with the legacy of a figure responsible for the Holocaust has left many across the political spectrum baffled and the opposition outraged.

The BJP Retaliates

The BJP has moved swiftly to turn the controversy into a broader critique of the Congress party's governance style. Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy led the charge, demanding an unconditional apology and accusing the Chief Minister of fostering an "Emergency mindset" that is now "out in the open." The BJP contends that such rhetoric is symptomatic of a larger pattern, pointing to recent escalations where the party has accused the Telangana government of suppressing dissent, targeting student protesters at the University of Hyderabad, and weaponizing police against political critics.

This flare-up comes at a sensitive time, as the state navigates multiple land disputes and the heat of the Jubilee Hills by-elections. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla went further, drawing parallels between the current administration’s land dealings and the historical excesses of the Indira Gandhi era. As the BJP continues to pressure the government over these comments, the incident underscores the growing volatility in Telangana’s political discourse, where the lines between development-driven governance and perceived autocratic overreach are increasingly under public scrutiny.
