Resort Politics Returns to Karnataka as Council Polls Loom

With the Legislative Council elections approaching, the Congress party’s move to sequester its MLAs has triggered a sharp war of words with the BJP.

The outskirts of Bengaluru, specifically the luxury resorts of Bidadi, have once again become the stage for high-stakes political maneuvering. Ahead of the legislative council elections scheduled for June 18, the ruling Congress party has moved its legislators into a resort, a classic "resort politics" tactic designed to keep the flock together. While the party maintains this is a routine exercise for electoral training, the optics have provided fresh ammunition for the opposition.

State BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra wasted little time in attacking the move, casting it as a sign of internal insecurity. "It is surprising that within just 15 days of taking power, the Chief Minister has lost trust in his own legislators," Vijayendra remarked, questioning why a government with a stable mandate feels the need for such containment.

Strategy Behind the Seclusion

For the Congress, the stakes are specific. With eight candidates in the fray for seven seats, the party is aiming for a clean sweep of five. Inside the resort, the atmosphere has been clinical rather than celebratory. On Wednesday, the focus was entirely on the mechanics of the ballot. Legislators were put through mock-voting drills, using model ballot papers to ensure that preferential votes are allocated with mathematical precision. In an election where every single vote is weighed, the party cannot afford a single invalid ballot or a cross-voting slip-up.

While the Congress is focused on internal discipline, the BJP remains characteristically defiant. Vijayendra asserted that his party is "completely relaxed," banking on the confidence that both their candidates will clear the threshold without the need for any pre-poll sequestering.

The Economic Shadow

Beyond the immediate skirmish of the council elections, the political temperature is being further stoked by brewing economic concerns. The BJP has used the resort gathering to pivot toward broader governance issues, specifically the implementation of the state’s flagship welfare schemes—'Gruha Lakshmi' and 'Gruha Jyothi'.

Vijayendra claimed the state is facing a severe financial crunch, alleging that the government is now raising technical barriers to exclude over 1.60 lakh taxpayers from these welfare benefits. He described the demand for fresh applications as a "distraction" meant to mask deeper fiscal pressures on the state exchequer.

Why it Matters

This episode highlights the fragile nature of political consensus in the state, even when a government enjoys a comfortable majority. Resort politics, while often mocked, reveals the deep-seated anxiety parties feel regarding the unpredictability of secret ballot elections. Whether the Congress’s rigorous training in Bidadi yields the desired five seats will determine the internal stability of the government in the short term. Meanwhile, the BJP’s strategy of linking administrative hurdles in welfare schemes to a broader "economic crisis" suggests they are looking to build a long-term narrative around the government's fiscal management, keeping the political pressure high even after the council results are declared.
