Tensions between the TVK and the ruling DMK escalated after a public disagreement over protocol during a city school function.

A routine school event held by the Chennai Corporation on June 4, 2026, descended into a public spectacle of political friction after M.R. Pallavi, the TVK Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar MLA, accused Mayor Priya of deliberately sidelining her. The friction began when the traditional kuthuvilakku lighting ceremony turned into a point of contention; as the Mayor finished lighting the lamp, Pallavi reached out for the candle, only for the Mayor to pass it to K. Karpagam, the Joint Commissioner of Education.

The snub prompted an immediate reaction from the TVK legislator. Accompanied by her supporters, Pallavi walked out of the venue in protest. The atmosphere remained charged throughout the day, with the MLA later refusing to accept a candle from Mayor Priya at a subsequent event in another school, signalling a breakdown in professional decorum between the two representatives.

A Struggle for Visibility

The public disagreement was further punctuated by viral social media footage showing the two leaders competing for centre stage. In one video, Pallavi and the Mayor are seen grappling to cut the same inaugural ribbon with separate scissors, with the MLA managing to snip the ribbon a fraction of a second before her counterpart. Such displays of one-upmanship highlight the growing strain between the newly elected TVK legislators and the DMK-led Chennai Corporation council.

Addressing the controversy, MLA Pallavi alleged that the administration is not only dismissive of her but is also failing the public. She claimed that local residents have been frequently directed by councillors to seek help from the new MLAs for civic grievances, which she interprets as a strategy to deflect responsibility for pending developmental work.

The Protocol Defence

In her defence, Mayor Priya maintained that the sequence of events followed established government protocols that have been in practice for years. "We have been giving precedence to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and IAS officers and then to legislators, zonal chairpersons, and councillors at events," Priya stated. She added that organizers had intentionally waited for the MLA to arrive despite her being late, asserting that there was no premeditated plan to exclude her from the proceedings.

This confrontation underscores the broader challenges of governance in a polarized political climate, where symbolic gestures—like who lights a lamp first—carry significant weight. For the residents of Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, the dispute serves as a stark reminder of the underlying rivalry between the ruling party and the opposition, potentially threatening the collaborative effort required to address the city’s civic infrastructure needs.
