Thiruparankundram Deepam Row: Government Insists on Tradition as Legal Battle Intensifies

State authorities have vowed to maintain established protocols for the Karthigai Deepam festival on Thiruparankundram Hill, setting the stage for a standoff despite recent judicial scrutiny.

The ongoing dispute surrounding the Karthigai Deepam at Thiruparankundram has reached a boiling point, with the state government firmly rejecting calls to alter long-standing traditions. Tamil Nadu Minister for Energy Resources and Law, R. Nirmalkumar, has publicly declared that the lamp will be lit atop the hill strictly "as per existing practice," effectively defying the push for procedural changes that have been at the heart of recent legal challenges.

This stance comes even as the Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench remains actively involved in the matter. During a hearing this past Friday, the court orally requested the government’s formal position on the controversy. Simultaneously, the bench extended an interim stay on previous orders passed by Justice GR Swaminathan, which had initially directed the authorities to ensure the lighting of the lamp on the deepathoon (lamp pillar) atop the hill.

A Clash of Ideology and Administration

The government’s decision to maintain the status quo has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents. Minister Nirmalkumar asserted that the administration would not permit any individual or religious force to leverage the cultural event for political gains. "We will not allow 100 per cent anyone or any religious force to enter into this and engage in politics," the minister stated, signaling a hardline approach to maintaining order at the site.

However, the opposition is not backing down. Former Telangana Governor and senior BJP leader, Tamilisai Soundararajan, launched a scathing attack on the government’s rhetoric. She accused the administration of framing a legitimate struggle for rights as a threat to public peace. Soundararajan specifically challenged the Minister’s argument that conditions must remain exactly as they were two years ago, questioning the logic of resisting change in a democratic system. "If the same logic were applied, people could ask why the current government came to power and whether change was needed at all," she remarked.

The Broader Political Landscape

This friction highlights the broader tension between administrative control and religious sentiment in the state. While the Vijay-led TVK and other political actors have navigated the complexities of this #deepam row, the government maintains that the current pathway and methods for lighting the lamp are the only ones permitted.

As the legal proceedings continue, the court is expected to weigh the government’s adherence to traditional practice against the contentions raised in the pending contempt petitions. The outcome will likely serve as a precedent for how religious events are managed on protected sites, making this more than just a local administrative issue—it has become a focal point of the state's current political discourse.
