In a massive realignment of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, a large cohort of former AIADMK stalwarts has switched allegiance to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The political climate in Chennai witnessed a significant shift this Saturday as more than 300 AIADMK leaders and functionaries officially joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at its Panaiyur headquarters. The mass defection marks a major tamil nadu shock, signaling a growing internal crisis within the AIADMK as several high-profile figures chose to back Vijay and his vision for the state’s government.

Among the prominent figures who transitioned to the TVK were former ministers Vellamandi Natarajan and Udumalai Radhakrishnan, along with former Mylapore MLA Natraj and various district-level office bearers. The induction ceremony was facilitated by senior TVK leadership, including Rural Development Minister N. Anand, Revenue Minister Sengottaiyan, and Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna.

Disillusionment and the Search for Legacy

The defectors were vocal about their reasons for leaving, citing an inability to serve their constituents effectively under the current AIADMK leadership. Former minister Udumalai Radhakrishnan remarked that for the past five years, party workers had been functioning under increasingly difficult circumstances. He noted that the discipline and public service ethos associated with the tenures of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and J. Jayalalithaa had eroded, describing the late leader’s passing as a fundamental turning point that left the party rudderless.

For these seasoned politicians, the decision to join TVK was framed as a return to the values they felt were missing from their previous party. Radhakrishnan explicitly stated that they found the ideological echoes of MGR and Jayalalithaa reflected in Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s leadership style. Furthermore, the former ministers emphasized that the respect and professional recognition offered within the TVK hierarchy played a decisive role in their migration.

A Wider Trend of Defection

The exodus appears to be widespread, with reports indicating that other senior figures—including Trichy N.R. Sivapathi, Kadambur Raju, and M.C. Sampath—have also aligned themselves with the ruling party. This influx of experienced political machinery into the TVK camp is expected to bolster the party's grassroots strength significantly.

As the new recruits settle into their roles, TVK ministers have expressed confidence that this momentum will lead to an electoral sweep. By absorbing a significant portion of the opposition's experienced cadre, the Vijay-led administration is effectively consolidating its authority, turning a significant political defection into a potential long-term strategic advantage for the state government.
