PM Modi Reviews Indigenous Defence Prowess at Surat Facility, Highlights ‘Zorawar’ Light Tank

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Armed Systems Complex in Hazira, Surat, marked a significant moment in the government’s ongoing push for indigenous military manufacturing. During his tour of the state-of-the-art facility, the Prime Minister was given a detailed briefing on several cutting-edge systems currently in development, with a specific focus on the ‘Zorawar’ light battle tank.

The Zorawar tank represents a critical leap in India’s efforts to bolster its border security. Developed through a collaborative effort between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and L&T Defence, the 25-tonne, air-transportable tank is specifically engineered for high-altitude mountainous warfare. Named after the famed 19th-century Dogra general, Zorawar Singh, the tank is designed to provide the Indian Army with the rapid mobility and firepower necessary to dominate sectors along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Strengthening the 'Make in India' Defence Ecosystem

Beyond the inspection of individual platforms, the visit served as a broader display of the growing maturity of India’s private defence sector. Modi took to social media to commend L&T’s contributions, noting that the exhibition at the Hazira facility offered a clear glimpse into the country’s deepening capabilities under the 'Make in India' mandate. The timing of this visit carries strategic weight. L&T is currently positioned as a key contender in India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. Having been shortlisted as a potential bidder for the Request for Proposal (RFP) of this fifth-generation fighter jet initiative, the company’s manufacturing capacity at the Surat site is increasingly viewed as a cornerstone for future domestic aerospace and land-combat production.

The focus on the Zorawar tank reflects a shift in military doctrine toward agile, highly deployable forces. As India modernises its ground assets, the ability to transport heavy-hitting armour into rugged, inaccessible terrains has become a priority.
