PM Kisan Samman Nidhi 23: Why 2 Lakh Farmers Face Deletion Ahead of New Payout

As the government prepares to release the latest kist, a tightening of eligibility norms and mandatory compliance checks have left lakhs of registered beneficiaries out of the loop.

The data emerging from the Ministry of Agriculture tells a story of consistent trimming. While the 22nd installment of the प्रधानमंत्री किसान सम्मान निधि 23 saw the government transfer funds to over 9.46 crore farmers, the projected figures for the upcoming payout suggest a dip to 9.44 crore. This contraction—a potential reduction of two lakh beneficiaries—is not merely a bureaucratic glitch but the result of a rigorous clean-up exercise across the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi database.

The Filtering Process

For years, the scheme has faced challenges regarding leakages and ghost beneficiaries. To address this, the government has intensified the enforcement of eligibility criteria. Farmers are being purged from the rolls for failing to complete their e-KYC, a mandatory step to verify identity. Beyond digital authentication, the Agriculture Department is strictly applying existing rules: households where both spouses or multiple family members (including minors) were claiming benefits are seeing their entries flagged. Furthermore, those who acquired land ownership after February 1, 2019, are now being disqualified.

Checking Your Status

If you are a recipient, the uncertainty can be addressed by visiting the official portal at pmkisan.gov.in. Under the "Know Your Status" tab, beneficiaries can input their registration number and captcha to see their current standing. A "green signal" against the e-KYC requirement is the primary indicator of a healthy record. However, if the status reflects remarks like "Withheld," "Under Verification," or "Eligibility Under Review," it is an immediate call to action. Farmers in these categories should visit their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or district agriculture office to rectify discrepancies before the window closes.

Why it Matters: The Bigger Picture

This periodic pruning reflects a broader shift in how New Delhi manages direct benefit transfers (DBT). By tightening the net, the government aims to ensure that the finite fiscal resources allocated for the kisan welfare reach only the intended, verified landholders. While the reduction in numbers might appear concerning, it is part of a systemic effort to sanitize the registry. For the average farmer, this serves as a reminder that government support is increasingly contingent on digital compliance. Ensuring your land records and e-KYC are synced is no longer optional; it is the prerequisite for participating in the national scheme.

As the next kist is set to be released from West Bengal, the government is signaling that the era of "automatic" recurring payments without periodic validation is ending. Whether a farmer is in a village in a BJP-led state or an opposition-governed one, the criteria remain uniform. For those not finding their names in the direct list, checking the beneficiary list by sub-district and block remains the most reliable way to confirm their status before the transfer date.
