PM Kisan 23rd Installment: Modi to Release Rs 18,880 Crore for Over 9 Crore Farmers in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the 23rd installment of the PM Kisan scheme on June 20 from West Bengal, targeting a massive direct benefit transfer to millions of agrarian households.

The political heat in West Bengal is set to rise, but for the country’s agricultural sector, the focus is firmly on the upcoming June 20 event in Hooghly’s Tarakeshwar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to release the 23rd installment of the प्रधानमंत्री किसान सम्मान निधि 23 (PM-Kisan) scheme, a move that will see Rs 18,880 crore transferred directly into the bank accounts of over 9.44 crore farmers across India.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed the scale of this payout, highlighting that West Bengal alone is set to see 45.35 lakh farmers receive roughly Rs 907 crore in this round. Since the inception of this welfare scheme in 2019, the cumulative national disbursement has now crossed the staggering Rs 4.46 lakh crore mark, cementing its position as a primary tool for rural income support.

Beyond Cash Transfers

The event is not merely about the cash transfer; it signals a shift toward tech-integrated agriculture. Along with the installment, the government is rolling out a "Digital Agriculture Mission" featuring a new agri-tech platform. This unified interface is designed to streamline fertilizer distribution, the management of Kisan Credit Cards, and the integration of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) services alongside MSP-based procurement.

For the farming community, this is a significant highlights moment. The Prime Minister will also unveil the restructured Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and its weather-based counterpart. With a budgetary allocation of Rs 12,200 crore for these insurance initiatives, the government is aiming to bring 1.10 crore farmers and 30 lakh hectares of farmland under a robust safety net by 2026-27.

A Push for Sustainable Farming

The government’s strategy is also pivoting toward ecological resilience. The launch of the 'National Natural Farming Mission' will specifically target West Bengal, where 346 natural farming clusters are slated to be built on 17,300 hectares of land. This project is expected to provide training, market linkages, and bio-based inputs to over 43,000 farmers, supported by the 'Krishi Sakhis' model.

Furthermore, the 'Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana' will be introduced in key districts including Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar, and Jhargram. By focusing on crop diversification and post-harvest infrastructure like storage and processing units, the state is looking to move beyond subsistence farming toward more value-added production.

Why it matters

This push represents the government’s attempt to modernize the rural economy by layering financial liquidity with technological infrastructure. By integrating digital platforms with crop insurance and natural farming incentives, the policy intent is clearly to reduce the risks inherent in Indian farming—volatility in weather, market access, and input costs. Whether these structural changes can significantly alter the productivity of smallholder farms remains the key metric to watch as the administration moves toward its 2026-27 targets.
