Anti-corruption officials have unearthed a massive wealth haul linked to an assistant executive engineer, spanning multiple districts across Odisha.

The Odisha Vigilance department has launched a high-profile investigation into disproportionate assets allegedly amassed by Baikuntha Nath Behera, an assistant executive engineer with the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) in Kandhamal district. Following a series of coordinated raids across several locations, including Bhubaneswar, Baripada, and Dharmasala in Jajpur, officials have seized a staggering ₹2 crore in liquid cash, alongside evidence of extensive real estate holdings and precious metals.

A Trail of Hidden Wealth

The scale of the discovery was revealed after anti-corruption teams targeted properties linked to Behera and his family members. According to Vigilance SP Sushant Kumar Biswal, the operation led to the recovery of 14 high-value plots and five multi-storey buildings. The search also uncovered 341 grams of gold jewellery and financial instruments exceeding ₹45 lakh in bank and postal deposits.

The recovery of cash was particularly notable; officials discovered more than ₹2 crore stored across two bank lockers. Because of the sheer volume of notes, investigators had to employ bank machines to ensure an accurate count. Authorities have confirmed that they are currently searching four additional lockers registered to the engineer and his wife to determine if further hidden assets exist.

The Valuation Process

While the cash haul has been confirmed, the total financial impact of the case is still being calculated. A technical wing of the vigilance department is currently conducting a formal valuation of the engineer's real estate, which includes several luxury properties. The department is also meticulously verifying the weight and market value of the recovered gold, alongside a broader audit of his various financial investments to compare them against his known sources of income.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by state authorities to curb corruption within government departments. The ITDA, which handles significant funds for tribal welfare, is frequently monitored for fiscal accountability. As the vigilance department continues its probe, the seizure highlights the persistent challenges state agencies face in tracking disproportionate assets that often go undetected until large-scale, multi-location raids are executed.
