North India Braces for Blistering Heatwave Before Monsoon Relief

As mercury levels soar, the IMD warns of a severe heatwave across North India until June 10, with a shift in weather conditions expected by mid-week.

The heatwave gripping North India shows no signs of relenting just yet. From the plains of Delhi-NCR to the hilly terrains of Jammu, a prolonged dry spell has left residents gasping for relief. According to the latest weather update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe heat conditions are expected to persist until June 10, turning afternoons into a health risk for the vulnerable.

In Jammu, the weather has turned particularly hostile. Mukhtar Ahmed, Director at IMD, has confirmed that the region will remain under a heatwave alert, with temperatures expected to hover between 42 and 43 degrees Celsius. While residents hope for a cool breeze, the current atmospheric stability means there is little respite in sight for at least the next few days.

Regional Impact and Forecast

The impact of this heat is not localized. A widespread alert has been issued for a belt stretching across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and parts of Western Uttar Pradesh. The intensity of this heatwave is reportedly higher than normal, prompting officials to issue strict advisories. The elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions are being urged to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

While the south and northeast parts of India are seeing the southwest monsoon advance with promise, North India remains largely parched. However, there is a silver lining in the forecast. By June 11 and 12, the IMD anticipates a cyclonic shift that could bring light rain and gusty winds, potentially reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, and occasionally touching 60 kmph in isolated pockets. This, meteorologists suggest, should bring the mercury down by a comfortable 3 to 5 degrees.

Why it Matters: The Economic and Health Toll

Beyond the immediate discomfort, this extreme weather pattern underscores a growing concern for regional productivity and public health infrastructure. Prolonged heatwaves disrupt daily labor, increase the strain on power grids due to peak cooling demand, and exacerbate water scarcity issues in urban centers.

The transition from a brutal heatwave to sudden, intense storms—as predicted for mid-week—is a recurring trend that often catches infrastructure off-guard. For the average citizen, the weather Jammu residents are experiencing is a stark reminder of the volatile climate conditions that are becoming the new baseline. Staying updated via reliable sources like the IMD remains the only way to manage these sudden atmospheric swings.
