Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for a nationwide shift toward sustainable living, even as she defends India’s economic stability against global geopolitical pressures.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman issued a clarion call for environmental conservation to become a daily necessity rather than a symbolic one-day observance. Participating in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ plantation initiative in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, the minister warned that unchecked ecological degradation poses an existential threat, potentially turning the earth into a desert if nature continues to be treated as a hostile force.

The minister highlighted the power of individual participation, pointing to the environmental consciousness of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a model for citizens to emulate. At Chikkajogihalli village, she oversaw a scientific afforestation project utilizing the Miyawaki forest model—a technique designed to create dense green cover in short timeframes. Emphasizing the need to keep future generations engaged, she directed local officials to install plaques bearing the names of the children who planted each sapling, turning the forest into a living, intergenerational tribute.

Beyond plantation drives, the minister stressed the importance of balancing ecological integrity with developmental aspirations. During recent interactions in Shillong, she noted that the global climate crisis has made weather patterns increasingly unpredictable, necessitating a nuanced approach to infrastructure. She argued that development in sensitive areas must be locally driven, allowing residents to determine how best to integrate modern connectivity, such as optical fiber, without compromising the landscapes they have nurtured for generations.

While championing green initiatives, the Finance Minister has simultaneously been busy addressing the nation’s economic outlook. In recent public engagements, she has underscored the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve foreign exchange in light of the escalating West Asia crisis.
