Muzaffarpur ICU Tragedy: Three Hospital Staff Arrested After Fire Claims Six Lives

Authorities have taken three staff members into custody following a devastating blaze at a private facility that left six patients dead due to asphyxiation.

The administration in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district has moved to hold hospital management accountable following a fatal fire incident at Prasad Hospital on June 4. Police confirmed on Friday that three individuals—the doctor in charge of the intensive care unit, the admin manager, and the maintenance manager—have been arrested in connection with the tragedy. The arrests follow an FIR filed by the local fire officer, marking a significant escalation in the investigation into the safety lapses that led to the deaths of six patients.

According to Mohibullah Ansari, the Superintendent of Police (City), the victims died not from direct burn injuries, but from choking on thick smoke that quickly engulfed the fifth-floor ICU. Eyewitness accounts from attendants and rescue personnel paint a grim picture, alleging that hospital staff fled the scene as soon as the fire broke out, leaving vulnerable patients trapped without assistance until fire brigade teams could reach the building. While reports from various outlets have fluctuated regarding the exact death toll, official police data confirms six fatalities, including two women.

Growing Scrutiny Over Safety Standards

The incident has triggered a wider probe into the structural and safety compliance of Prasad Hospital, located in the Brahmapura locality. Investigators are currently reviewing whether the building’s construction adhered to mandatory fire safety norms. "We are investigating as to whether the hospital building has been constructed in accordance with rules," Mr. Ansari stated, noting that if the facility is found to be in violation of these regulations, further legal action—potentially targeting the hospital’s owners—is likely to follow.

While the facility’s management has remained largely silent since the incident, the arrests of Pankaj, the ICU doctor, alongside Ram Kumar and Ajit Kumar, underscores the police’s focus on professional negligence. Despite the chaos, rescue operations were successful in evacuating more than 20 other patients, though the loss of the six individuals has sparked outrage among the families of the victims. Among the deceased, four were local residents, while the others hailed from the neighboring districts of Sitamarhi and Sheohar.

A Pattern of Institutional Negligence

This incident highlights the precarious state of private healthcare infrastructure in Tier-2 Indian cities, where the rapid expansion of medical facilities often outpaces regulatory oversight. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on why the hospital lacked the immediate emergency response protocols necessary to evacuate critically ill patients from a high-floor ICU.

With three staff members now held in custody, the Muzaffarpur police have indicated that the net may widen as the forensic and compliance audits progress. For now, the families of the victims are left awaiting answers, while the local healthcare community faces a stern reminder of the lethal consequences of neglecting fire safety protocols in environments where patients are unable to move on their own.
