Monsoon Fury: Heavy Rain Batters Kerala, Red Alert Issued In Five Districts

Relentless downpours have triggered widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across the state, with authorities reporting multiple fatalities amidst the intensifying southwest monsoon.

The southwest monsoon has unleashed its full force across Kerala, transforming the state into a landscape of flooded streets, uprooted trees, and damaged homes. Following a delayed onset on June 4, the intense rainfall has disrupted normal life significantly, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to escalate weather warnings. While early reports from the ground varied, regional authorities and multiple news outlets have confirmed that the severe weather has already claimed lives and caused widespread logistical chaos.

High-Level Alerts and Regional Impact

The IMD has placed five districts under a red alert, signaling expectations of extremely heavy rainfall—exceeding 20 centimetres within a 24-hour period. Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod remain the most vulnerable areas under this highest-level warning. Meanwhile, a broader swathe of the state, including Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta, is currently under an orange alert, indicating very heavy rainfall between 12 and 20 centimetres.

The human cost of this weather system is becoming increasingly clear. In Thrissur, a 29-year-old man was killed when a tree collapsed onto his temporary shed in Manaloor. Conflicting reports from various agencies suggest the total death toll across the state may be higher, with some sources citing up to three fatalities and several individuals reported missing as rescue teams navigate the challenging terrain.

Widespread Disruption and Precautionary Measures

The atmospheric instability has brought more than just localized flooding; it has forced a state of high alert across all administrative levels. Public services, including schools and colleges, are facing closures in several parts of southern India as authorities grapple with power cuts, waterlogged roads, and potential flight disruptions. The intensity of the current monsoon phase is part of a larger weather pattern affecting several Indian states, with heavy rainfall reported in neighboring Karnataka and across parts of the northeast and central India.
