Millions locked out as Meta platforms face another global outage

Users across India and the globe were left staring at error screens today as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger experienced a major service disruption.

For millions of users across India, the Philippines, Australia, and the United States, Friday afternoon brought a familiar, frustrating digital silence. Instead of the usual scroll of feeds, Facebook and Instagram users were met with generic error messages, with many finding themselves abruptly logged out of their accounts. By 2.10pm GMT, outage-tracking platforms like Downdetector had already logged over 62,000 reports for Facebook and thousands more for Instagram, signalling a widespread technical failure.

The disruption was not confined to a single region. In India, reports spiked early in the afternoon, mirroring a similar trend seen in Singapore and across North America. Users attempting to access the apps or websites were told that "something went wrong," a vague acknowledgement that left millions in the dark about the status of their personal and professional data.

Meta’s response

Meta, the parent company of these platforms, was quick to acknowledge the friction but remained tight-lipped regarding the root cause. Andy Stone, a spokesperson for the company, confirmed the situation on X, stating, "We're aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We're working on it." Despite the widespread nature of the outage, Meta did not immediately offer technical details on what triggered the collapse of its infrastructure.

This isn't the first time the company has faced such scrutiny. The current situation follows a pattern of intermittent, high-profile service disruptions that have plagued Meta’s family of apps in recent years. Earlier this year, in March 2026, a series of major outages left feeds frozen and accounts inaccessible for several hours, prompting questions about the robustness of the tech giant's global server architecture.

Why it matters

The frequency of these outages highlights the precarious nature of our digital dependency. When Meta’s platforms go down, the impact is rarely just social; it hits small businesses that rely on these apps for sales, digital creators, and communication channels that have become essential infrastructure. For a company that processes data for billions of people, these recurrent technical "glitches" are becoming a significant liability.

As the platforms slowly return to normal service, the incident underscores the vulnerability of centralized digital networks. While users have learned to treat these moments as temporary inconveniences, the lack of transparency from tech giants during such outages remains a point of concern for regulators and the public alike. For now, the global network is limping back to life, but the question of stability in Meta's sprawling ecosystem remains unanswered.
