Making Waves: Bengaluru’s Srikaanth Viswanathan Leads Team Across the Strait of Gibraltar

A diverse Indian team of four swimmers successfully conquered the challenging Strait of Gibraltar in just over four hours under the expert guidance of veteran coach Srikaanth Viswanathan.

The Strait of Gibraltar, known for its treacherous currents, unpredictable fog, and status as one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, proved no match for a quartet of determined Indian swimmers on May 1. Led by Bengaluru-based open-water specialist Srikaanth Viswanathan, the team of four successfully navigated the 16-kilometre stretch from Tarifa in Spain to the Moroccan coast in a swift four hours and 33 minutes.

A Carefully Curated Team

The successful crossing was the culmination of months of rigorous preparation. The team featured an eclectic group of athletes: Mumbai-based helicopter pilot Deepika Rana, Bengaluru-based Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) officer Shreyas Hosur, Nashik-based wellness entrepreneur Tanvi Deore, and fitness icon and actor Milind Soman.

Srikaanth, a seasoned marathon swimmer who has tackled major global challenges including the English Channel and the North Channel, emphasized that this was not merely a feat of physical strength. The team was selected following strict qualifying trials in cold-water conditions to ensure that each member possessed the necessary mental resilience and compatible swimming paces required for an intense tandem crossing.

Facing the Elements

For the participants, the journey was as much about logistics as it was about endurance. Deepika Rana, who transitioned into open-water swimming only two years ago, noted the difficulty of balancing an unpredictable career as a helicopter pilot with the demanding training regimen required for the swim. Between interval sessions and cold-water acclimatization, the team had to manage travel and fatigue, often training in remote locations with limited access to facilities.

The final push began a week before the event, with the group training twice daily in Tarifa to adapt to the local environment. On the day of the swim, the conditions aligned, allowing the team to maintain a steady cadence through the pristine, open waters between the two continents.

Pushing Boundaries

For Srikaanth, whose extensive career includes completing the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, the Gibraltar project is part of a larger mission to encourage endurance athletes through his academy, "Dreams to Live." Each member of this specific team brought a history of pushing limits—from Shreyas Hosur’s previous Manhattan Island swim to Tanvi Deore’s recognized success in the English Channel.

Reflecting on the experience, the swimmers described the surreal feeling of being surrounded by nothing but the horizon and the sea. The successful crossing underscores a simple philosophy held by the group: that with consistent effort and the right team, even the most daunting maritime challenges can be overcome.
